Class of 83 first look: Bobby Deol plays a dean in uniform in Shah Rukh Khan’s Netflix release
The Class of 83 : The Punishers of Mumbai Police
The first look of Bobby Deol-starrer Class of 83 is out and it shows him as an IPS officer. The film is made under Shah Rukh Khan’s banner Red Chillies Entertainment and will release on Netflix.
Shah Rukh Khan’s production house Red Chillies Entertainment has shared the first look of their upcoming film, Class of 83. The film still shows Bobby Deol as an IPS officer as he addresses a gathering of policemen at an event. He sports a moustache in the first look.
Sharing the film still, the official Red Chillies Entertainment account wrote, “A dean who’s a class apart, quite literally! Meet @iambobbydeol in #ClassOf83, our first @netflix_in film. Directed by @atulsanalog and produced by @gaurikhan & @_gauravverma.”
The film revolves around an upright policeman Kabir (Bobby), whose students grapple with the complexities of honour, morals and devotion towards their nation. It also stars Annup Sonii, Bhupendra Jadawat, Ninad Mahajani, Hitesh Bhojraj and Sameer Paranjape. Directed by Atul Sabharwal, the film is based on Hussain Zaidi’s book with the same title.
Talking about the film, Bobby had told PTI in an interview last year, “I have been in the industry for a long time and I have known Shah Rukh for years. He is a great guy and I am happy he is producing the project. He himself is very dedicated to his work and being part of his production is amazing as he makes sure no stone is left unturned to make a good project.”
Shah Rukh had told Economic Times in an interview in 2018, “It gives an opportunity to a lot of youngsters who didn’t know where to take their small films. So my deal with Netflix CEO Reed Hastings and chief content officer Ted Sarandos is not just on paper. I’ll try and make stuff for you for which I can’t find a theatre and I am non-self-obsessed to know that certain films don’t need to be in the theatre. Theatres will also change. It will perhaps be more like Broadway where movies will play for six months.”

Shallow stories which are not backed by enough research will be rejected
The investigations and the discussions over the Vikas Dubey encounter in Uttar Pradesh refuse to stop. Murmurs of films and shows based on the incident are already gathering momentum. Author and former journalist S Hussain Zaidi, whose books, researches and articles have often acted as fodder for several Hindi films over the years, including Kaminey, Shootout At Wadala and Phantom, believes that fact can often outdo fiction. Over the years, the author has become synonymous with research-heavy books and articles revolving around crimes and criminals.
Zaidi has been consulted by filmmakers like Vishal Bhardwaj, Anurag Kashyap and Sanjay Gupta for their films that have been set in worlds that are fairly familiar to him. Sanjay Leela Bhansali's upcoming film, Gangubai Kathiawadi has also used his writing as its base.
Talking about what drives him to work in a challenging environment, Zaidi told BT, “Criminals know that I have no personal agendas and I am not siding with any of the gangs. I write objectively. So, they don’t ever come after me and I know I have no danger to my life from them. What drives me to gather information and write about these criminals? I feel that these days, readers are very discerning and intelligent. They will appreciate a writer if he has worked hard on his content, gathered enough material and done sufficient leg work for it. Only then you will be respected in the profession. Shallow stories and books which are not backed by enough research and material will be rejected by readers who have read sufficiently. So, to do justice to the work I have on had, I have to put in a hundred percent and work on the material till I am satisfied with it. Fact can often outdo fiction. Perhaps, this is why even my fiction is based on fact. As a writer, I experiment with fiction and nonfiction. If fiction is the brick, fact is the clay. For instance, my upcoming book, The Endgame, is technically a work of fiction, but actually an amalgamation of a lot of nonfiction.”
