The Latest From MitchAlbom.com: Mitch Inducted into Sportswriters Hall of Fame

Monday night, Mitch Albom was inducted into Sportswriters Hall of Fame in Salisbury, N.C. He joins the likes of Grantland Rice, Red Smith, Damon Runyon, Jimmy Cannon, Dave Anderson and more. His co-inductee was Dick Vitale of ESPN on the broadcast side. Each spoke and was given a plaque as well as an engraved Louisville slugger. For his 30 years in the business, Mitch was recognized as one of the best ever at what he does.

BIG HONOR FOR MITCH - Monday, Mitch Albom was inducted into Sportswriters Hall of Fame in Salisbury, N.C. he joins the likes of Grantland Rice, Red Smith, Damon Runyon, Jimmy Cannon, Dave Anderson and more. His co-inductee was Dick Vitale of ESPN on the broadcast side. Each spoke and was given a plaque and an engraved Louisville slugger. For his 30 years in the business, Mitch was recognized as one of the best ever at what he does. He thanked his fellow colleagues - and all his readers everywhere - in a speech that drew a standing ovation. "You have graced me with this honor and I do thank you very much," Albom told the crowd.

A tale of teens, guns - and hope


He walks in the room with a plastic helmet over his head. He sits. He takes off the helmet. You can see the damage on the right side of his head. Sixty days earlier, he had gone to a best friend's party, things got out of hand, and as the party was breaking up - with some kids cheering "East side" and some "West side" - a gun was fired, and Balaal Hollings went down.


Cheers and bullets. An incongruous pairing. But no more incongruous than being a child in Detroit, where youthful innocence meets adult horror every day of the week.

Due to overwhelming demand, Mitch Albom’s hit play, Ernie, has been extended through August 11, five weeks past its original end date. The play, presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network, has required performance extensions every year since its debut in April 2011.

Lt. Col. Mark Weber, who has served 24 years in the U.S. Army and is now battling incurable cancer, visited Detroit June 3.  Mark spent time with Mitch and his assistant, Kerri Alexander, on his way to New York to appear live on "The View" June 5 to promote his book "Tell My Sons."  A memoir to his three young boys, "Tell My Sons" was originally self-published by Mark, who printed 5,000 initial copies and quickly sold all of them.
