Ivy Newton-Gamble is a graduate of Florida A & M University earning a B.A. in Sociology. She is also an avid reader and traveler fascinated by people and African cultural traditions. Her goal is to make African desserts as common place as French pastries and African main courses a regular weekday dish. She currently lives in Florida tending to her garden of organically grown fruits and vegetables and is a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.

Goso the Teacher

Once there was a man named Goso, who taught children to read, not in a schoolhouse, but under a calabash tree. One evening, while Goso was sitting under the tree deep in the study of the next day’s lessons, Paa, the gazelle, climbed up the tree very quietly to steal some fruit, and in so doing shook off a calabash, which, in falling, struck the teacher on the head and killed him.
