Contact Contact by Laurisa White Reyes

Mira wants to die. She’s attempted suicide twice already and failed. Every time she comes in contact with another person, skin to skin, that person’s psyche uploads into hers. While her psychologist considers this a gift, for Mira it’s a curse from which she cannot escape.

To make matters worse, Mira’s father is being investigated for the deaths of several volunteer test subjects of the miracle drug Gaudium. Shortly after Mira’s mother starts asking questions, she ends up in a coma. Although her father claims it was an accident, thanks to her “condition” Mira knows the truth, but proving it just might get her killed.

Polar Opposites by Kai Strand Book Blast ~ $100 Giveaway

Polar Opposites Polar Opposites: Super Villain Academy #2

The supers are balanced. Academies have altered their curriculum to teach both sides of the super power spectrum. All’s well in the super world. Right?

When Mystic kidnaps Oceanus, Jeff learns it isn’t all right. Turning to the newly balanced supers for assistance, he panics to find they’ve done nothing to rescue Oceanus. When no ransom request follows, he worries Mystic’s plan never included returning his girlfriend. Frustrated, he’s forced to work with the only super willing to help. Oceanus’ ex-villain, ex-boyfriend, Set.

Mystic isn’t the only one hiding something. Nothing about Jeff is balanced. Temper flares result in scorched clothing or flying furniture, and his charm has become an indiscriminating people-magnet.

Jeff is convinced, or maybe just hopeful, that his lack of control is directly related to Oceanus being gone. But will he and Set find her before Jeff loses control completely and will they find her alive?

Amazon * Barnes & Noble
Excerpt

They never talked about how they ended the world. Twice. Jeff glanced at Oceanus, bent over her phone in the passenger seat of his car. A curtain of black hair shielded her profile from view, but he thought he saw her smile.

He reached over and tucked her hair behind an ear. Yep, she was smiling. So was he. He felt his skin heat, but not as a side-effect of his super power ability to create fire. This heat was due to thoughts of Oci running her small warm hands down his back and tilting her face up to accept his kiss.

“ How about a movie?” Oceanus asked.

“ Which one?” Jeff replied, scanning the traffic and then his girlfriend.

Oci’s thin arms, delicate wrists, and bird-like legs that barely reached the floorboards, all gave the impression she needed protection and caring for. Whereas, with her super strength, she could lift the car they drove in onto two wheels if someone were trapped underneath.

“ Oh, perfect!” Oceanus flung her hair over her shoulder and straightened in her seat. Her smile illuminated Jeff’s peripheral vision as he concentrated on traffic. “The one I want to see starts in forty-five minutes. That gives us plenty of time to get there, get popcorn and some good seats, and watch the previews. I love the previews, don’t you?”

Jeff glanced at her again. The devilish glint in her eye made him frown. “What movie?”

Oceanus peeked through thick black lashes. Jeff was pretty sure she even batted them a bit. “What movie, Oci?”

“ Accidental Hero.” At Jeff’s groan, Oceanus chuckled. “Come on, you have to admit the storyline looks kinda familiar. Besides, the special effects look amazing. You love that crap.”

Jeff stared at the traffic and said nothing. He knew it was useless. He could mount the best argument against seeing the movie, but Oceanus always got her way. Cursing his Oceanus-shaped soft spot, he turned at the next intersection and headed toward the theater.

The whiny guitar tones of the heavy metal song Super Villain erupted from his cell phone. He looked at the display and saw Mother’s number. “Can you answer that?”

Reaching for his phone, Oceanus said, “You know, now that we aren’t technically super villains anymore, you should consider changing your ringtone.”

King of Bad King of Bad: Super Villain Academy #1

Jeff Mean would rather set fires than follow rules or observe curfew. He wears his bad boy image like a favorite old hoodie; that is until he learns he has superpowers and is recruited by Super Villain Academy – where you learn to be good at being bad. In a school where one kid can evaporate all the water from your body and the girl you hang around with can perform psychic sex in your head, bad takes on a whole new meaning. Jeff wonders if he’s bad enough for SVA.

He may never find out. Classmates vilify him when he develops good manners. Then he’s kidnapped by those closest to him and left to wonder who is good and who is bad. His rescue is the climactic episode that balances good and evil in the super world. The catalyst – the girl he’s crushing on. A girlfriend and balancing the Supers is good, right? Or is it…bad?

The 2nd Annual Loving Day Blog Hop

Happy Loving Day to all!

For folks who haven't heard of this auspicious day, 47 years ago marked the landmark case that would allow interracial marriage in the last few states that still deemed it illegal. Here's a little more background, courtesy of Wikipedia:

Loving Day is an annual celebration held on June 12, the anniversary of the 1967 United States Supreme Court decision Loving v. Virginia which struck down all anti-miscegenation laws remaining in sixteen U.S. states citing "There can be no doubt that restricting the freedom to marry solely because of racial classifications violates the central meaning of the equal protection clause." In the United States, anti-miscegenation laws were U.S. state laws banning interracial marriage, mainly forbidding marriage between non-whites and whites. Loving Day is not yet an official recognized holiday by the U.S. government, but there is a movement to persuade U.S. President Barack Obama to make it as such. According to Time, Loving Day is the biggest multiracial celebration in the U.S.
Thanks to Swirl Awards for holding this online celebration every year. Last year was a special intro to the occasion as it was just days before I married my best friend and husband. Without this landmark case, I wouldn't be able to do so! Interracial pairings inspire so many stories in my head across all genres and I love seeing readers enjoy seeing reflections of themselves and their relationships in my stories.

Here are some more facts from the folks at LovingDay.org:

The New York City Council issued a proclamation to officially recognize Loving Day in 2014. A special thanks to Council Member Daniel R. Garodnick!

Bill de Blasio made history this year as the first interracially married mayor of New York City. He is one of the very few elected officials in an interracial relationship, and he may be the first white politician in U.S. history to win such a major election while already interracially married to someone of African ancestry. Needless to say, we were thrilled.

Bill De Blasio met his wife Chirlane Mccray in 1991, the same year that Spike Lee's film Jungle Fever came out. Only 48% of Americans approved of interracial marriage that year (according to a Gallup poll).

When Barack Obama's parents got married in 1961, it was illegal in 22 states. When Richard and Mildred Loving got married in 1958, it was illegal in 24 states. Only about 4% of Americans approved of interracial marriage at that time.

Today, 87% of Americans approve of interracial marriage, while 11% disapprove (according to a 2013 Gallup poll).

Cheerios produced their second ad featuring Gracie and her interracial family for the 2014 Super Bowl. This was at a cost of about $4 million, and despite a flood of racist reactions to their first ad in the series. And Chevrolet's ad for the Chevy Traverse during the Winter Olympics in Sochi featured a remarkably diverse cast.

I love it!

This year I want you readers to celebrate with me and the other awesome authors on the tour. The tour is offering a $25 Amazon or B&N gift card to one fortunate winner (rafflecoptor down below). I'm throwing in some bonus prizes myself:

$20 Amazon Gift CardWinner's Choice of 1 book from my backlistWinner's Choice of 1 Sandra Kitt IR ebook (The Color of Love, Close Encounters, Between Friends)
Sandra Kitt introduced the popularity of the IR genre today. I love the way she weaves a tale that transcends the romance genre and enters its own genre realm. Her stories are great character studies that not only entertain but make you think. I thought it'd be a wonderful gift to give to another reader, the enjoyment I gained from her books. That portion of the prize will be gifted through Amazon so make sure you have access to receive it! :-)

To enter, leave me a comment down below telling me what book got you hooked on the IR genre! If you are new to the genre, let me know that as well and I'll send you a little something to introduce you to it. ;-) Don't forget to leave your email address!

Happy entering and happy Loving Day!

Blackwood Crossing by MK McClintock ($50 Book Blast Giveaway)

As a huge fan of Scottish Highlanders, I'm so loving the sound of this book. This comes on the heels of Diana Gabaldon's new book so I'm ecstatic to add both of these to my shelf!

Blackwood Crossing Blackwood Crossing

If you had to make a choice, would it be loyalty or love?

Torn between loyalty to her family and refusal to marry a laird she despises, Rhona Davidson accepts a dangerous proposal from a man she knows only as Blackwood.

Leaving behind a life of leisure, Charles Blackwood bravely serves his country with honor and the skill of a trained British agent. When his newest case returns him to the wild Highlands of Scotland, he is faced with a choice between killing a man and saving the only woman he has ever loved.

Charles and Rhona join their lives, only to discover that their choices will result in bloodshed, unless they can uncover a truth long buried, deep in the Highland soil.

Praise for Blackwood Crossing

"MK McClintock has spun an enchanting tale deeply entrenched in the lands of Scotland and England that will leave you riveted to your chair until you turn the last page."

- Donna McBroom-Theriot, mylifeonstoryatatime.com

“This is a wonderful book with suspense to keep me on the edge of my seat and surprises to keep me guessing . . . a feisty heroine and a strong, gentle hero . . . My poetic soul is fed by the beautiful descriptions of nature.” – Verna Mitchell, author of Somewhere Beyond the Blue

“Ms. McClintock has written another whirlwind romance set in a historical world. I loved returning to a world with such a mesmerizing atmosphere, and I am more than eager to read Devon's romantic story in the next British Agent Novel.” – R. Harness, Amazon reviewer

“Her writing is always top notch . . . In BLACKWOOD CROSSING, her storytelling flows with a clear plot and strong characters.” – L. Townsend, Amazon reviewer

Excerpt #1Charles held the silver watch in his palm, watching the seconds and minutes pass. Devon would arrive to relieve him in half an hour. Until then, his thoughts would continue to be plagued with images of Rhona in the room behind him. If she had met him, Charles Blackwood, Viscount and British agent, and not Charles Pearce, the common man who saved her life a little more than two years ago, would they have found a way to stay together?Keeping their identities secret was one of the reasons why both he and Tristan had quit the agency. Had the last assignment, which pulled them back into service, been for anyone other than a friend, they would have remained retired or at least tried to. That matter was easily solved, but then another case arose, and then another, until they found themselves once again at the top of the agency’s assignment list. They had managed for nearly two years to avoid accepting assignments, and Charles appreciated that Tristan was here for him.He also knew there wouldn’t be another woman in his lifetime, and he was prepared to make his life a solitary one, but he never imagined escorting the only woman he had ever loved to another man. Charles recalled Rhona promising him that one day he would regret his choice to leave her behind.“My father will never let me marry a commoner, but I will run away with you.” Rhona pressed her gloved hand against Charles’s face.Charles turned his face inward and kissed her palm. “Nothing would please me more, but I can’t stay.”Rhona pulled away. “I don’t understand.”Charles ignored the heavy ache in his chest. “As you said, I’m a commoner, and England is home. It’s where my work is.”“Then work here.”“Too many are leaving Scotland. You know it’s not possible.”Rhona stood from the bench they’d been sharing inside the walled garden, now left dormant with the heart of winter settling in. “It would be possible if it’s what you truly wanted.”“Rhona, it’s not a simple thing for me to stay.”“When do you leave?”Charles stood beside her and reached out, but she backed away. His hand dropped to his side. “I have to leave in the morning.”“One day, Charles, you will regret this choice.” Rhona walked quickly, frost and leaves crunching under each step as she moved farther away.“I already do.” Charles’s whisper was carried away with the wind. There’s also another giveaway taking place on Goodreads. Chloe Miles Interview Spotlight & Giveaway

It's been a while since I posted an author spotlight and I'm excited to welcome YA author Chloe Miles to AWD! Chloe joined me in a Q&A about her writing process and her Faded Trilogy, now available at online venders. She's also holding a giveaway for a couple of Faded ebooks. Stay tuned after the interview!

AWD: When did you decide you wanted to be a writer?
CM: When I was six years old I said I wanted to be a writer. I was always writing and coming up with story ideas as a kid, and when I was in my teens I was fascinated by the idea of one day being either an author or a scriptwriter. Then I found out about the self-publishing platform through Amazon and realized that I could make my goals a reality. I published my first novel when I was twenty-three and I’ve now just released my third at twenty-five.

AWD: Do you write every day? How much time do you spend on your writing?
CM: I’m not writing at the moment as I’m spending all of my time promoting The Faded Trilogy, but I was writing nonstop every day when I was creating the series. I was writing early in the morning until late at night six days a week. I felt like I lost touch with the real world for a little while there as I was spending more time with my fictional friends than my real ones, but writing is something that I’ve always loved and always wanted to do, so as time-consuming as it is, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

AWD: How would you describe the genre in which you do most of your writing?
CM: I’ve always loved the Young Adult genre because I feel like there are so many sub-genres within that genre that you can create a story from and so many ways you can make a character relatable to that specific audience. But, in saying that, I’ve had such positive feedback from all different age groups. It really is a genre that has no age limit and I think that’s what makes that particular genre so special.

AWD: What would you say has been your most significant achievement as a writer?
CM: My most significant achievement as a writer so far would be reaching one million reads of my first book Faded (The Faded Trilogy, Book 1) on Wattpad. I received so much incredible feedback from so many wonderful readers, and it really gave me a boost in confidence to continue writing the rest of the series, which is now available in both ebook and paperback.

AWD: What are you working on at the moment?
CM: At the moment I am currently working on promoting The Faded Trilogy to as many readers as I possibly can and working with wonderfully invaluable bloggers like yourself to help me spread the word.

All three ebooks are currently $0.99 each at Amazon, iTunes and Barnes & Noble

Missing Lily by Annette K. Larsen – Blog Tour ~ A Recommended Read

Missing Lily
“You don’t know who I am,” I whispered. He didn’t move—either away from me, or closer—and after an interminable moment, I stepped back and hurried out of the house. He didn’t follow me as I fled into the night.Lylin was not used to being alone—much less alone, hurt, and lost. So when she is separated from her guard and forced to abandon her horse, she counts herself lucky to stumble upon a manor house. Still frightened by those who chased her into the night, she keeps her identity a secret, calling herself Lily as she accepts the help of kind servants, and the compassion of Lord Fallon. When they fall into an easy friendship, she wonders if her secrecy was too hasty. However, as she gets to know the manor and its residents, Lylin discovers that she’s not the only one hiding secrets, and it may be a very good thing that her host doesn’t know her true identity as a member of the royal family.

ReviewI really enjoyed Missing Lily! Maybe I've been stumbling across way too many explicit reads lately but this was a breath of fresh air because it focused on characters getting to know each other before anything romantic followed and the strength of its characters made the story come to life. I also loved how the story started right in the middle of the action. Lily (real name Princess Lylin) was a strong character in the sense that I got her angst, motivation and she had me rooting for her safety all the way. I hadn't read Just Ella but this book makes me want to search it out and read it if it's written as well as Missing Lily. The romance was nicely paced and right from the beginning when Lily met Rhys, the chemistry was there as he really cared about and respected her. There's a twist that comes later on with Rhys and one of Lily's sisters that I won't reveal here and even though I wanted to see Rhys stand up and fight to have Lily, I can understand the predicament he was in. Poor Lily even had to grow up with such a bratty sister and parents who didn't hide their favoritism between the two sisters (out of a total of seven). It made me root for her even more.
I can't say enough things about the writing. Ms. Larsen penned such an intriguing tale with an array of characters that really stand on their own apart from the other characters. And she tells such a great story that is a 100% clean for all ages and all parts of the family!  For anyone who has daughters who love princess stories with a sweet romance on the side, this would be great for them! I know I'll be saving this to share with my future daughter. I look forward to following this series very closely and adding Missing Lily to my read again shelf. I'm happy to add this as on my best of 2014 reading list! add to goodreads
