“The Empty Gun”

“The Empty Gun” is a science fantasy short story forthcoming in Jonathan Strahan’s anthology Mission Critical.

Let’s just say that vendettas and ancient guns with mysterious powers don’t combine well.

Thanks to my betas: Rob Chang, David Gillon, Mel Melcer, and Ursula Whitcher.

Hexarchate Stories

Hexarchate Stories is a forthcoming collection of short fiction set in the world of the Machineries of Empire trilogy (Ninefox GambitRaven Stratagem, and Revenant Gun).  It’s about half reprints and half new material; the latter is mostly in the form of “Glass Cannon,” a novella sequel to Revenant Gun.

An ex-Kel art thief has to save the world from a galaxy-shattering prototype weapon…

A general outnumbered eight-to-one must outsmart his opponent…

A renegade returns from seclusion to bury an old comrade…

“The Chameleon’s Gloves”“How the Andan Court”“Seven Views of the Liozh Entrance Exam”“Omens”“Honesty”“Bunny”“Black Squirrels”“Silence” (new)“Extracurricular Activities”“Gloves” (new)“Hunting Trip”“The Battle of Candle Arc”“Calendrical Rot”“Birthdays”“The Robot’s Math Lessons”“Sword-Shopping”“Persimmons”“Irriz the Assassin-Cat”“Vacation”“Gamer’s End”“Glass Cannon” (new)

First, thank you to David Moore and the wonderful folks at Solaris, and Jon Oliver; as well as to my agent, Jennifer Jackson, and her assistant, Michael Curry.

Thank you to my beta readers: Joseph Betzwieser, Chris Chinn, Daedala, David Gillon, Helen Keeble, Mel Melcer, Sonya Taaffe, Vass, and Ursula Whitcher.

Also, special thanks to Marie Brennan, worldbuilding expert, for her help in figuring out how the h*archate works in ways small and large.

This one is for Helen Keeble, author of the best ashhawk ever. Burn brightly.

The Vela

The Vela is a serialized space opera forthcoming from Serial Box, which I co-wrote with Becky Chambers (The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet), Rivers Solomon (An Unkindness of Ghosts), and S. L. Huang (Zero Sum Game). Concept by Lydia Shamah.

Gun-for-hire Asala Sikou is used to looking out for number one, especially in a solar system that’s slowly dying as its sun cools.  But when she and hacker Niko are sent to find out what became of a vanished ship of refugees from the frozen outer planets, they stumble across a secret that could mean life or death for the entire system.

Features a tough trans woman heroine and her nonbinary sidekick, big space battles (I may have helped with that part), rampaging mobucks, grasshen cup noodles, intrigue, and death-defying antics.  Don’t miss out–order the season today!

Dragon Pearl

Dragon Pearl is a middle grade Korean mythology space opera: the heroine is Min, a fox spirit who runs away from her impoverished planet to solve the mystery of her missing brother.  Along the way, she’ll encounter space pirates, a sinister tiger spirit captain, ghosts, and more–perhaps even the legendary Dragon Pearl with its ability to terraform worlds.

Dedicated to my daughter, Arabelle Sophie Betzwieser, my favorite Dragon.

Thanks to my wonderful editor, Stephanie Lurie, and Rick Riordan, both of whom made this a much better book; and to my agent, Jennifer Jackson, and her assistant, Michael Curry.  I am also incredibly grateful to my beta readers: Joseph Betzwieser, Dhampyresa, David Gillon, Helen Keeble, and Yune Kyung Lee.
