Toko Shinoda at 100: Exhibition at Portland Japanese Garden

Toko Shinoda at 100: Exhibition at Portland Japanese Garden:

I was there yesterday. Shinoda’s work is marvelous. She uses ink that’s 400 years old. This exhibition includes paintings and prints, and each print is unique because she adds a touch of coloring by hand.

Of Darkness and Light, Horror Novel Set in Glasgow, Free on Kindle this Week

Of Darkness and Light, Horror Novel Set in Glasgow, Free on Kindle this Week:

“Bram Stoker… M.R. James… Stephen King… Now there is Barry Graham.” -Scottish Field

“I’m there when it gets dark to kill you if I can…”

The Bogey Man’s sinister chant used to scare the wits out of Gary Scott when he was a five-year-old, growing up in the worst part of Glasgow. But now, nearly twenty years later, he’s an experienced, and, he likes to think, hard-nosed journalist. He’s far too preoccupied with real lif...

Guerrilla surveillance camera destruction hits the U.S.

It started in Berlin: Anarchists, donning black bloc attire, hit the streets at night in pairs, small groups or alone to smash and dismantle the CCTV surveillance cameras adorning the city streets.

They posted videos and photos of their exploits online and called the guerrilla project Camover.

Why I Watch People Die, article originally published in Flaunt, republished in Op Ed News:

Art: Vince larue

Early in 2008, I was hanging out in L.A. with my friend Andrew Pogany, who was then the editor of Flaunt. I told him I had written a 10,000 word long article about witnessing executions, and that I couldn’t get any magazines to look at it because of its length and subject matter.

“I’ll publish it,” he said.

He did, and it won a FOLIO Silver Medal in the Best Single Article category. It was...

Bare-Knuckle Boxing Probably Isn't What It Used to Be

I’ve long wondered about the old days of boxing, when fights were bare-knuckle and could last for hours. In my own boxing days, I sometimes injured my hands even though I had as much as 18 feet of crepe bandage and an eight-ounce glove on each hand, so I wondered how people managed to fight for hours without wrecking their hands and turning each other’s faces into ground meat.

I speculated that, having no protection for their hands, they must have thrown very few punches, which wou...

love

The late Zen master and photographer John Daido Loori would tell his photography students to think of someone or something they loved, and take a photograph of that love - but the photograph couldn’t be of the person or thing. They had to find it, a visual image of that love, somewhere else in the world.

This photograph by Daishin Stephenson is a portrait of her and me.

The Guitar: a story for Valentine's Day

from Scumbo

She got a little bit emotional when she saw him kiss the guitar before putting it in its case. It was a jokey, theatrical gesture meant to make her laugh, but she saw a seriousness behind it.

“You don’t have to,” she said. “We could take some of my jewelry.”

“It’s okay.” He fastened the case shut. “It’s fine. I’ll get it back next month.”

“I don’t like to see you without it.”

He laughed. “I hardly play it anyway.”

They left the apartment, him carrying the guitar case with one hand and h...

It's Not About Joshu Sasaki: How Abuse of Power Happens In Zen Sanghas

“When you meet the Buddha, kill the Buddha.” - Rinzai

The New York Times reports on allegations of Zen teacher Joshu Sasaki Roshi sexually harassing his female students.

From the article:

Such charges have become more frequent in Zen Buddhism. Several other teachers have been accused of misconduct recently… Critics and victims have pointed to a Zen culture of secrecy, patriarchy and sexism, and to the quasi-religious worship of the Zen master, who can easily abuse his status.

I...
