Review: Rachel McClellan's Fractured Soul

Fractured Soul Blog Tour Information
About Fractured Soul
Llona will do whatever it takes to protect her new found friends and home, but the dark plot threatening Lucent Academy, a school that’s supposed to be a safe place for Auras, may be too powerful for even Llona to defeat. This fast-paced tale of love, loyalty, and overcoming the darkness will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last page!

My Take: Having not read the first book, Fractured Light, I didn't know what to expect. After reading this book, I bought the first because I enjoyed not only the story, but this writer’s way with words. The book is well-written and completely captivating. It reminded me a little of the Vampire Academy books, only I enjoyed these two novels much more.
In the beginning of Fractured Soul we learn that  Llona and May are now attending the Lucent Academy which is a school for girls with special "Talents." However things quickly go south as the battle to keep the students safe, specifically the Auras, begins. Llona's internal battle adds fuel to the fire as she rebels against the rules and sneaks out of the school at night. She meets up with some not so good guys, but is saved by a mysterious stranger! This is an entertaining read and held my imagination from page one. I’d highly recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys supernatural stories. I’d also even recommend it to those who don’t, because this novel just may make a believer out of you.     [image error] [image error] [image error] [image error] [image error]

I give the novel five thumbs up
What others are saying:

“I love these books! A kick-butt heroine and a hottie love interest, with a refreshingly original concept. Be prepared—once you start, these are hard to put down.”—Paula Cotton, book reviewer at ReadingLark.blogspot.com

“Fractured Soul is a brilliant sequel, exceeding even the remarkable first book in the series. It will haunt your every waking moment between the times you’re reading it, and it will stay with you long after you’ve finished. It’s an amazingly well written and engrossing story that I highly recommend—after you’ve read the first one, of course.”

Guest by Camelia Miron Skiba :

Don't swim in that water—it has algae! Wanting to lazily spend my Sunday by the pool, reading and soaking in the sun, my husband burst my bubble, telling me the pool can't be used because of algae. To me the water looked clear as the summer sky, refreshing, inviting. A little bit of green around the edges, green I don't see unless I bend over the pool's lip.Algae? Don't use the pool? Let me tell you about water with real algae. Water so murky that you couldn’t see your palm beneath its surface, let alone the rest of your body. Water used to water the corn and wheat fields, quench animals' thirst, and launder ragged rugs. And yet, I spent many, many summer swimming in such waters. Looking back I wonder what was I thinking? I wonder what angels and saints and other celestial creatures protected me from getting sick, ever. Dodged the bullet? More than once, morethan one. But at the time, it was the highlight of our vacations spent with Mama's relatives in a small village called Rasvani, about an hour and a half southeast of Bucharest. As soon as summer vacation began, our parents schlepped all three of us to Mama's Aunt Floarea. For ten weeks all we've done was to play in dirt, swim in murky water and shed a few layers of skin until the sun had nothing else to burn. We climbed trees and ate fruits plucked straight from the branches, used newspapers instead of toilet paper and ran barefoot, stopping only to pull another thorn from our heels. We prayed before going to bed, but I have to make a confession—I prayed not for God’s forgiveness, but for the horde of mosquitoes to bite everyone else but me. We slept six in a bed, packed like sardines, giggling at Aunt Floarea's threat to kick us to the chicken house if we continue misbehaving. We waited in line for a mug of steaming, sweet milk as Aunt Floarea's skilled fingers wrapped around the cow's teats. We shared our milk with tick-filled kitties and stole blind puppies to be our pets. We all drank from the same metal can hanging on the well's pole by a tattered rope. We frantically waited at the street corner for Uncle Dita to return from the lake with a bucket filled with fresh-caught fish—the more hunched he walked, the more fish he carried and dinners those nights seemed regal. And yes, I'm still alive. And yes, I'm swimming in the algae water, but don't tell my husband. He'll have a fit.

Good luck!

Do Over by Shannon Guymon

Excerpt:
I hate men.” Iris whispered furiously as she gripped the woman’s cell phone so hard one of the rhinestones popped off.
The woman gently pried her phone out of Iris’s clenched, white hand. “Well, like I said, I just thought you should know. By the way, since I’m your new best friend, call me Cherish.”
Iris glanced around her wedding reception and felt a cold, heavy dread settle over her shoulders. It went well with the misery, shock, and despair that were already suffocating her.
“Telling me yesterday would have been nice,” she said softly as the lace on her wedding dress started to itch her arms.
The tall voluptuous blonde winced and stepped closer, looking like she was about to drop yet another bomb on the happiest day of her life. “Look, I didn't even know about you until last night when Riley’s other girlfriend confronted me. Some trashy girl named Germaine. An office assistant. So cliché. She knew all about you and was fine, but when she found out about me, that was too much I guess. And just for the record, I didn't know about either of you when I started seeing Riley. Trust me, I’m not the type to share. I don’t even know why I’m here to be honest. I think it was your wedding announcement she threw in my face. It was just so sweet. I had to see what kind of girl would cover her announcement in bright red poppies. And here you are. Just as I pictured you.”

My Thoughts: I enjoyed the novel, clear to the red-tipped flame hair. Iris is the happy bride...for a hour or so, anyway. When Riley's numerous affairs come to light, she confronts him AT the receptions and promptly demands a divorce (You go, girl!) NO woman should put up with a cheat...Ever!

Iris not only changes her life, but her look also (see comment about hair above). She sets about living her life, man free. Until, unbeknownst to her, she becomes the object of a bet... enter Trey. Then the real fun begins.

Do Over is a fun, clean read, but what I liked best is that it's okay for the characters to be quirky and outside the "norm," not something you see often in LDS fiction.

I give it four thumbs up! A really great read from this accomplished author! I'm looking forward to reading more of her work.

Welcome to Author Shannon Guymon

I live in Utah with my six children and I’m the author of ten books – so far. I enjoy the outdoors, reading and being with my children.  I’m a HUGE believer in happy endings.  Scarlett really should have been happy with Rhett, and it’s a darn shame Leo and Kate  didn’t float safely into New York on the Titanic.  Alas, since I can only control my own imagination, happy endings are found in my books.

Linda Weaver Clarke, author of Sweet Historical Romances

Today I'd like to introduce you to Linda Weaver Clarke, the author of Sweet Historical Romances.
Here are a few of her titles:

These and more are Available on Amazon here
This is an interview I hope you'll enjoy,

You are the author of a historical sweet romance series called “A Family Saga in Bear Lake Idaho.” What was the inspiration behind the first novel?
In Melinda and the Wild West, I included one of my own experiences as a substitute teacher. An eight-year-old student had been labeled as a troublemaker by her teacher. The students had listened to the teacher and steered away from her, not wanting to be her friend. This not only made her feel degraded, but she wanted to fight back and she did. She stopped doing schoolwork, refused to be part of the class, and got into a few fights. She seemed angry at the world but after working with her for a while, I soon learned what a sweet and wonderful child she was. She had characteristics that I was impressed with. When she realized that I really cared, she was willing to do her work, just to please me. In fact, her mother was impressed that her daughter wanted to please me so much. I’ll never know how this young girl’s life turned out, but in my novel I chose a happily-ever-after ending, just because Melinda cared and made a difference in the girl’s life.
Why was this subject important to me? Because something similar happened to one of my own daughters when she was little and it was so difficult to see my child receive an unjust label from a teacher.
This novel has “sweet” romance and adventure. What kind of adventure? When Melinda takes a job as a schoolteacher in the small town of Paris, Idaho, she comes face-to-face with a notorious bank robber, a vicious grizzly bear, and a terrible blizzard that leaves her clinging to her life. But it’s a rugged rancher who challenges Melinda with the one thing for which she was least prepared—love.
Do you ever add true family experiences in your historical novels?
After writing my ancestors’ and parents’ stories, I felt so close to them and wanted to add their experiences to my “sweet” romance series. In Melinda and the Wild West, I added one of my father’s experiences as a boy. When he was thirteen, he was asked to bury the skunks that his father had shot. But before he buried them, he drained the scent glands of each skunk until he had a jar full of “skunk oil.” Then he took it to school with him to show his classmates. He was so excited as he explained how he had done it. But in all the excitement, the bottle slipped from his hands and landed on the schoolroom floor and splattered everywhere. The stench was so terrible that everyone held their noses and ran outside as fast as their legs could go. The teacher excused school for the rest of the day and my dad was considered a “hero” by his classmates because he had closed down the school.
What kind of research do you do for one of your novels?
I put a great deal of research into my novels. The subplot of Jenny’s Dream, the 3rd book in this series, is about Old Ephraim, the ten-foot grizzly bear. The research about this old grizzly was exciting to me because Old Ephraim was from southern Idaho, where I was raised. He wreaked havoc wherever he went, killing sheep and scaring sheepherders so badly that they actually quit their jobs. He was so powerful that with one blow of his paw, he could break the back of a cow. I found out he was the smartest bear that ever roamed the Rocky Mountains. No one could catch him. Every bear trap Frank Clark set was tossed many yards away from where he had put it, and the ones that weren’t tripped had his tracks all around it. How did he know? Because Old Ephraim only had three toes. So they called him Old Three Toes. He was too smart to be caught so Frank Clark had to outsmart him. In this story, I included every detail about this bear and his deeds.
The Bear Lake Monster was a fun one to research. Scotland has the Lock Ness Monster and Bear Lake Valley has theirs. In my 4th novel in this series, Sarah’s Special Gift, the subplot is about David trying to disprove the legend of the Bear Lake Monster. I was raised just over the mountain from Bear Lake so the research about the monster was fun. I discovered that it was 90-feet long, his eyes were flaming red, and his ears stuck out from the sides of his skinny head. Its body was long, resembling a gigantic alligator and it could swim faster than a galloping horse. It had small legs and a huge mouth, big enough to eat a man. (Ha-ha.) I was surprised about what I found. I even got an email from a woman who said that her grandfather had seen the monster. In fact, many people still believe in the Bear Lake Monster today.
What was the inspiration behind the last four novels in this series?
Edith and the Mysterious Stranger was inspired by my parents’ courtship. They didn’t meet the traditional way. They met through letters. Their story was so romantic that I patterned this book after their courtship and used my father’s sweet, romantic letters. Can people really fall in love through letters? Absolutely! With mysterious letters, cattle rustlers, a spunky woman, Halloween, and young love, there is always something happening.
Jenny’s Dream was inspired because of some unpleasant childhood experiences that I experienced as a young girl and now Jenny must learn forgiveness before she can choose which dream to follow. Meanwhile, a legendary ten-foot grizzly is seen in the area and its boldness has frightened the community.
Sarah’s Special Gift was inspired because of my great grandmother who was deaf. I wanted to learn more about her life and how she coped with her disability. I learned so much about her and how courageous she was, so I decided to give her experiences to my character, Sarah. This story has deep-rooted legends, a few mysterious events, the mystery of the Bear Lake Monster, and a tender love story!
Elena, Woman of Courage is my last book in this series. My inspiration was the “Roaring Twenties.” This was a new decade of independent women, when they raised their hemlines and bobbed their hair. I found that if a woman bobbed her hair, she was fired from her job. A new language grew from this time period. They used words like: Cat’s pajamas! Horsefeathers! Baloney! When referring to a woman, they used doll or tomato. What was the difference? A tomato was a woman. A doll was a good-looking woman. A woman’s legs were called “gams” and her lovely shape was referred to as a “chassis.” If you were in love, you had a “crush,” were “goofy,” or “moonstruck.” And when a woman was not in the mood for kissing, she would say, “The bank’s closed.” Thus, my new novel was born! As Elena Yeates fights to prove herself as the newest doctor in town, the town’s most eligible bachelor finds it a challenge to see if he can win her heart.

Top Five Ways to Procrastinate Writing
1. Facebook. Wait, Pinterest, no it’s email. DISTRACTIONS. Social networking is an important part of selling novels, but it can quickly consume us to where we can’t get any other writing done. Authors sell more when they keep producing books. Set aside a specified amount of time each day to accomplish your social networking and stick to it, especially when you’re under a deadline.

2. Writer’s block. What is writer’s block anyway? It’s nothing more than NOT FOCUSING on your writing. If you take the time to concentrate and open yourself up to ideas, you’ll begin writing. Eliminate the distractions and begin free-writing until the words turn into story.

3. Realizing you’re a terrible writer or rather, LACKING CONFIDENCE. Every author struggles with certain aspects of the writing process, but when you realize that with practice, you will be able to overcome your limitations, it will give you greater confidence. When you’ve got confidence the self-limiting belief that you’re not good enough won’t restrict your writing any longer.

4. Being too busy with housework, shopping, meetings and other important tasks. It’s hard when you DON’T MAKE WRITING A PRIORITY. If you plan to be a successful writer, you need to write as if it’s a job. You write during set hours, setting goals and meeting them regularly.

5. Eating cookies and cake and drinking caffeinated drinks to stay awake is an UNHEALTHY DIET. Our brains work better when we feed them nutritious foods. When we’re loading our bodies with processed sugars and flours, we’re out of balance and our energy dips making it hard to concentrate. It also affects our moods and mood plays an important part in creativity.

The Alias by Mandi Tucker Slack

Blurb:After a long and difficult divorce, Jacey thinks the worst is over. Little does she know she'll soon be forced to go undercover to protect her family, and in the process, she'll risk losing her identity, her future, and her heart. With a lightning pace, a good dose of humor, and a plot that's full of suspense, this thrilling novel is an edge-of-your-seat read.Jacey is a divorced mom who needs to escape her life, quickly. Her ex-Hubby, an abusive creep, has the FBI on his tail, and he also believes he deserves to have custody of their son, Blaze. Jacey assumes a "new" identity, and escapes to Utah with her son.

The story was intense, with action and suspense at every turn. The abuse by the Ex-hubby were real and heart-wrenching, making it difficult to read without crying.

The Alias was a great read and I enjoyed every last second of it!! First-time novelist Mandi Slack did a masterful job at telling a story on such a difficult subject. I can't wait to read more from her! Thanks, Mandi!Click on the likes below for: Website:

Posted: 18 Jan 2013 09:04 AM PSTWelcome back to Author Mandi Tucker Slack

Mandi Tucker Slack grew up in Orangeville, UT, where her father worked as a coal miner for eighteen years. In 1987 the coal mines shut down for a time and her father joined the U.S. Army. They were stationed in Hanau, Germany, and she had the opportunity to explore Europe. Mandi’s family returned to Utah in 1992, and they settled in Orangeville once again, where she attended and completed High School. She then attended the College of Eastern Utah, where she studied Geology. Eventually Mandi changed her major and moved on to Utah State University while she completed a degree in Special Education. She then married her best friend, Charles Slack. They have three children, with one on the way, 6 chickens, and a lizard (sometimes several lizards).Their family loves to spend time together. They enjoy 4-wheeling, camping, and especially rock hounding. Her house is littered with rocks and fossils. As a child Mandi spent many weekends with her parents and sister exploring abandoned mining towns and searching for relics among the brick ruins. Her adventures with her family are often the inspiration for her stories.

Interview
If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?Definitely, the past. I love antiques, old buildings, and anything that has a "history".  My new book "Tide Ever Rising" begins in an old ghost town near my hometown. I'm obsessed with exploring these old, abandoned towns.
If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?My journal, a pen, and a giant bag of gummy bears
What is one book everyone should read?Mrs. Mike by Nancy and Benedict Freedman
What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?Kroger Brand Butterzinger
One food you would never eat?Cow stomach
If you could jump in to a book and live in that world, which would it be?Anne of Green Gables
What inspired you to want to become a writer?I was always an imaginative child. I made up stories and play acted them out all the time. As an adult, I'm still just as imaginative, but I can't act, so I write. I always have new stories popping up in my head, and I feel driven to write them down.
Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book."[Mandi] has a natural way of bringing her characters together and sealing their bonds with exciting circumstances!"... Ranee S. Clark, author of A Contemptible Affection
What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?Wait Till Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn
What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring author?Never give up.
If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?Newport, Oregon. We have vacationed out there a few times. I absolutely love to beach-comb for fossils along this stretch of beach. The forests are so amazing and mysterious. I think I could be very happy living there.
What's the craziest writing idea you've had?Tide Ever Rising, my new novel that is set to be released Feb. 12th, was probably my craziest idea. When I was a child, I spent a lot of time in ghost towns with my parents exploring old buildings and looking for treasures. As an adult, I spend quite a bit of time in the ghost towns near my hometown. One night, after spending the day with my husband and children exploring a town near Eureka, Utah, I had a crazy dream about exploring an old house and finding a journal inside the foundation. When I awoke, the idea wouldn't leave. I wrote it down on a piece of paper with a note that said, "Could make an interesting beginning for a book". A year or two later, while I was cleaning under my bed, I found my dusty note. Intrigued with the idea, I sat down and wrote the first chapter of Tide Ever Rising, and the book just took on a life of its own after that.
