What Is It?

He leans forward and asks me, "What is it that you want to do, exactly?"

"The unreasonable," I reply.

Ray Bradbury, 1920-2012

A Story of Love

by Ray Bradbury, first published in 1951
That was the week Ann Taylor came to teach summer school at Green Town Central. It was the summer of her twenty-fourth birthday, and it was the summer when Bob Spaulding was just fourteen.

Everyone remembered Ann Taylor, for she was that teacher for whom all the children wanted to bring huge oranges or pink flowers, and for whom they rolled up the rustling green and yellow maps of the world without being asked. She was that woman who alway...

Fan-funded Pop

So I think this new video from Saint Savior is pretty sweet. What's sweeter is that it was entirely fan-funded via Pledge Music. I remain perplexed why she hasn't plain exploded the charts. (This Ain't No Hymn was one of my Top 10 favorites last year.) Here's hoping that this new release sends her over the top. At least the Guardian is paying attention...
But Saint Savior's new project got me to thinking, will crowd-sourcing be the future for all creative works? Even starting out in this nove...

Be The Prosciutto

From author April L. Hamilton's Indie Author blog...

Dear Indie Booksellers:

Whether your operation is brick and mortar, strictly online, or a combo plate of both, you have an important role to fill in the communities you serve. It makes me sad to see shop after shop shuttered, and I miss the ones I used to frequent. So please, know that as both an author and a consumer, I want you to not only survive, but to thrive.

But many of you, those whose daily operational thoughts and actions a...

Kristine Kathryn Rusch: Royalty Statement 2012

Today I'm featuring an unexpected guest post. Background: The following post was originally posted on Kristine Kathryn Rusch's business blog. Shortly after it was posted, the entire site was brought down by malware. She then reposted the story on an unlinked blog she uses for a pseudonym. That post got taken down too. Kris Rusch is one of my favorite commentators on the topics of writing and publishing. She has over 30 years of experience in the industry, and her voice has been crit...

I'm still alive...

I'm just dealing with some sick folk. The inpatient rotation of medical school is extremely demanding. There are only two shifts per day, and we have to care for some very complex patients. We work six shifts per week and count our blessings when we see the sun. I've just finished my first month on service and have one more month to go. I'll have much more time for fun stuff after that.

To Our Shareholders,

...

Invention comes in many forms and at many scales. The most radical and transformative of inventions are often those that empower others to unleash their creativity – to pursue their dreams. That’s a big part of what’s going on with Amazon Web Services, Fulfillment by Amazon, and Kindle Direct Publishing. With AWS, FBA, and KDP, we are creating powerful self-service platforms that allow thousands of people to boldly experiment and accomplish things th...

How Did Things Ever Get So Far?

The Justice Department on Wednesday accused five of the nation's largest publishing houses and Apple of fixing prices on e-books, forcing consumers to pay tens of millions of dollars more for their favorite titles.

In a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in New York, the government painted a portrait of an industry desperately trying to turn a profit amid rapid changes in technology and aggressive competition from online retailers. In phone conversations, e-mails and dinners at exclusive...

They couldn't dominate Death inside the hospital...

"They couldn't dominate Death inside the hospital, but they certainly made her behave. They had taught her manners. They couldn't keep death out, but while she was in she had to act like a lady. People gave up the ghost with delicacy and taste inside the hospital. There was none of that crude, ugly ostentation about dying that was so common outside the hospital. They did not blow up in mid-air like Kraft or the dead man in Yossarian's tent, or freeze to death in the blazing summertime the way...
