Bohol: Tarsiers and Chocolate Hills
Bohol! It’s a fun place. Go if you can. There are some seven thousand islands that make up the Philippine archipelago. Bohol is the tenth largest. It’s popular for pretty much two reasons: tarsiers and chocolate hills.
I’ll begin with the hills. There are more than one thousand of them. They’re covered in green grass, which turns brown during the dry season (hence the name). We rented some ATVs and made our way to a remote one.
We tried to climb it but realized we were trespassing on somebody’s property. The goats tied up to sticks that lined the meadowy path should have been a hint we were on private land, but you see stranger things in the Philippines, and we didn’t give them a second thought.
Now for those bizarre tarsiers. They’re an endangered species endemic to the Philippines. They go back forty-five million years, which is pretty amazing considering they’re dumber and more inactive then koalas. I heard the West only learned about them as late as the eighteenth century.
Anyway, they’re cute and look a little like Gizmo from Gremlins. They sleep all day and, even if they wake, you can put your finger right in front of their nose because they’re blind in light. And as cute as they seem, I wouldn’t recommend one as a pet, as they are suicidal (so said my trike driver). Apparently if they get stressed they’ll either hold their breath or bang their head against something until they die. I’m still not sure if he was kidding or not.
A final story to end on. My two friends and I stayed in Tagbilaran City, the capital of Bohol. For some reason all the hotels there are called Pension Houses. I couldn’t be bothered to ask why. Regardless, we were anything but pensioners. On our last night we went to the only real club in town. I tried to get in wearing flip-flops, but the guy at the door turned me away. Given the laid back, general crumbiness of the town, this was sort of like turning away a guy in shorts from Disneyland, if that makes any sense.
Anyway, we improvised. Our first plan was for my friend, who’s about the same height as me, to go in and toss me his shoes out a window. I would then put them on, stick my flip-flops in the waistband of my shorts, and enter through the front door. However, this plan was shelved when we discovered the supermarket across the street sold rubber shoes that were closed toe. The largest size, however, was only eight or nine, while I’m thirteen. Nevertheless, I bought them, borrowed some scissors from the girls at the counter, and cut the heels out. The result? A pair of ridiculously ugly, cheap shoes, which didn’t fit on my feet but–and here’s the important part–were closed toed!
I had no problem getting in. The irony that I was wearing something a homeless guy would find unbe
fitting was lost on the guys at the door.
We proceeded to have a merry time, helped by the fact we met a bunch off off-duty bartenders with a seemingly limitless supply of pitchers filled with vodka and orange juice. Oh, and the fifty cent shots of tequila certainly added to the fun!
