The funniest book you will ever read

Let's Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir Let's Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir by Jenny Lawson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

One of the funniest books I've ever read. Seriously... I was laughing out loud as I was reading this. Lawson's voice is even more hilarious than the situations she is describing. A must read!

The Rapture of Canaan

The Rapture of Canaan The Rapture of Canaan by Sheri Reynolds

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I read this book for the first time over ten years ago. I have read it countless times since then. This is one of those books that I can honestly say has influenced me to be a writer. Sheri Reynolds was able to capture a whole world in her writing in a way that made me hungry to do so myself. This is a book that I will forever be grateful for and will never forget.

Thomas French's 'Zoo Story'

Zoo Story: Life in the Garden of Captives Zoo Story: Life in the Garden of Captives by Thomas French

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A very interesting book that tackles the difficult question of a zoo's place in society. Instead of a choosing a side on this controversial issue, in true journalist fashion French presents all points of view, proving to the reader that the implications of this topic are far from simple and clear. The stories of the individual animals are heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time, and provide a nice balance to the political and ethical questions being raised.

Sam Kean's 'The Disappearing Spoon'

The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements by Sam Kean

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was one of the best books I've read all summer. I'm not much of a science person, so I wasn't sure at first if I would understand the things Kean was writing about. However, every part of this was fascinating. Kean explains science in a way that is both interesting and easy to comprehend. The different stories and situations kept me enthralled and made me want to go out and learn more. I also plan to use some excerpts from this book in the classroom- I think my high school students would find this book as compelling as I did.

I also can't wait to read Kean's latest book: "The Violinist's Thumb"!

Faulkner's 'Intruder in the Dust'

Intruder in the Dust Intruder in the Dust by William Faulkner

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I love Faulkner, but this one was a real challenge. I found this book even more difficult than 'The Hamlet.' However, as it was Faulkner, it was definitly worth the read.
