parsonage

We, uh, I had to see at least one more Anne thing before we left PEI. At random, I chose the Bideford Parsonage Museum, the boarding house where Lucy Maud stayed for three years while she taught school.
And it was a great choice. The local who minded it very proudly told us the history. Unlike the buildings in the Avonlea village which "the Cavendish man just took and moved there" the Parsonage is in its original location, saved from touristic relocation by the residents of Bideford.

In their ...

lighthouse

We continued west until we hit the West Point Lighthouse, a still used and working lighthouse from 1876.
However, now it is not only used as a lighthouse but as an inn. You can stay in the Tower Room or the Lightkeeper's Quarters:
And, you can climb to the very top of the light house, reading all the lighthouse factoids and lurid stories of shipwrecks on your way up the many stairs.
As I said, you have to mount many stairs to get to the top. These steps are quite steep and rather crooked. At th...

windmills

We were enjoying the pastoral landscape on drive of the west cape, when we suddenly began to see windmills. Not the Dutch sail-type, but modern, white metal ones--part of the windfarms that create energy for PEI. Like gigantic, mechanical trees, they grew on the horizon in direct contrast with the bucolic countryside.
It was fascinating and wondrous at the same time. Some residents dislike them, finding the dissimilarity to their natural scenery distasteful--but both Squatchie and I found it ...

bottle houses

I took pity on Squatchie and decided to visit a couple of non-Anne sites. One gray and grizzley morning, we went off to explore the West Cape of PEI. One of the odder sights we stopped at was the Bottle Houses.

I had heard about bottle houses from a children's book so this sight definitely piqued my interest. I find the idea of transforming something considered worthless into something beautiful very appealing so I was rather excited.

But I have to admit that I found it more humorous than insp...

vacation

Every since I was 12 years old, I've loved the Anne of Green Gables books. Since then, I've dreamed of visiting Prince Edward Island, home of Anne...er Lucy Maud Montgomery, the author of the said books. Of course,in the past, whenever I offered PEI as a vacation destination most looked at me with blank stares. Why go to PEI when there were choices like Vegas, Cape Cod, Paris or China? It looked like my dream to go to PEI would go unfulfilled.

Until now! Today I am off for my first (and probab...

hometown signing

So, on Saturday I had a booksigning at the B&N in my hometown of New Hartford, NY. Thanks to my mom, who spread the word (and bribed and cajoled, as well), there was a really nice crowd waiting for me.

So after a brief reading, I signed books for three hours!

It was so great to see so many people. My next door neighbor, whom you might recognize from The Ugly Vegetables as Irma came:
As well as my elementary school librarian, Ms. McCurdy from The Year of the Dog and The Year of the Rat:

There were ...

on my (mom's) desk monday

I'm in Upstate NY visiting my parents, where my mother proudly displayed her winning entry in the 3rd flower show of the NY State Fair. For this piece "Windmill" she won 3 blue ribbons: Best in Class, Design Choice Award Best in Section, and the Award of Excellence in the Design Division. The branch and round clusters of flowers all slowly spin with the air movement around them (like a mobile).

Yay, Mom!
