You could exchange the “Science Fiction” for “Self-published” and “Proper Literature” for “Traditional Published” and the cartoon would work just as well.
If you have a story that is a “one-shot”, not a series, and/or it is “literary fiction”, I’d say go the traditional published route. But if it’s not…unless you think you’ve written a best seller that is going to fall neatly into a genre and be immediately be picked up by a publisher…you might be better off going at it alone.
At this point in time, self-published authors are making more money than traditionally published authors, and are more likely to be making a living writing. (They’re NOT selling more books, but they receive higher royalties).

Really, all I want...
Is my writing to be entertaining. I may bury some meaning in the banter and adventure, but I don’t want it to be work to read.

The Power of a Series
As anyone who follows me is probably aware, Fates the 4th book in my I Bring the Fire series was just released.
It was my best release ever. Since it went live (2 days ago?) I’ve sold over 100 copies—for now at the price of $2.99. That isn’t a lot compared to Hugh Howey, or Lindsay Buroker —or the 10,000 authors in line ahead of me on the Amazon rankings, but for me, it’s awesome. Today I got my first reviews, except for one, they’re reviews of the series from fans who haven’t read Fates, but who are enthusiastic about doing so. I won’t complain…I hope Fates doesn’t let them down.
Even with my fanfic audience, I didn’t get these numbers when I released Murphy’s Star, I Bring the Fire, Monsters, Chaos, or In the Balance. Every time I release, a few more people know my name and are willing to take a leap of faith in my writing. (I actually have people finding my original fiction and going back and reading ALL my fanfic because they can’t wait for me to release again. How awesome is that?)
I am so glad I’ve put myself out there. I have a 10 year plan to becoming a full-time author, and this release makes that goal feel more and more possible.
Thanks everyone out there for your support…and for everyone waiting to write the perfect novel, let me say, even if at first you don’t succeed, keep trying.
(Also, thank you elementarydata for making me create a fan page—really good business decision!)

Camp NaNoWriMo 2014 has officially launched! Whether you’re writing a new novel, tackling a screenplay, or finishing an existing piece of work, Camp is a writing free-for-all. For those of you still on your publishing journey before Camp, Blair Thornburgh,…
I hate lots and lots of exposition. I quit after one paragraph. I like to jump right into a characters world, see what they’re seeing, and think about what they’re doing right then.
Erp. But I’m not an expert.

Logical sass.
My editor noticed that I rely a lot on eyebrow quirks, and head tilts to convey emotion. I wondered about that…
And then I realized I got my start writing Spock.
Spiderlings is not a word...
But you know what it means just by looking at it right? Right?
(Critters from Fates… I should probably draw a few).
So part IV isn't available for nook through their store. The other ones have been. Do you know what the deal is? I want to reaaaaad.
Hi,
I have submitted it to B&N, but sometimes it takes a few weeks to get there. It is at Smashwords. Their EPub format is what Nooks read.
I’m really sorry I can’t hurry the process up for you!

Ok, let me rephrase my question. :) When do you think "Fates" might be out? Because I'm heading into the third book and I've had the privilege of being able to read your wonderful story all the way through. I especially love how you weave Loki's history wi
Wow, how did I miss this? I am so sorry for not responding! It’s out now at Amazon and Smashwords. Here are the links:
