Roles in a Narrative

I feel a little stupid for even having to bring this up, but then I reminded myself that I explained at the end of Dreams of Mariposa that Marie is a villain protagonist. I was getting sick of protagonist-centered morality, which IMO has only gotten worse in contemporary fiction, but here we are.

Spoilers below, but I mention the series relatively early in all my examples.

Narratives can take place in many mediums – books, video games, movies, tv shows, and sometimes the characters we foll...

Open Sandbox; Different Castles

One of my least favourite attitudes is that because it’s in the realm of the fantastic, we can do everything and anything. Now, yes: You can pick a direction and do whatever you like at first, but you need to be internally consistent with your creation’s logic.

Narnia feels different than Middle Earth, which again feels different to Earthsea. These works are very popular and have stood the test of time, but also differ in rules and tone, philosophy, as well as who is the intended audience. Th...

More Thoughts on Romantasy, and Cross-Genre Fiction

I saw a trend on one of the Facebook groups I frequent where someone asked if there could be any truely ‘good’ romantasy – not necessarily Hemmingway but, with well-developed plot, characters and world building.

I pointed out that romance by itself can be very well written, even if it wasn’t my cup of tea I’ve been given stories I wasn’t expecting to love, and other times I get given stories that should have everything I want but are kinda meh.

               ...

Thoughts on Warnings and Disclaimers in Books

I’m noticing a trend where I’m picking up a fantasy book where I expect battle scenes and authors are putting out the disclaimer for fantasy violence. I’m kind of irked, mostly because if you have the word ‘sword’ in the title and then skip all the action sequences, I’m going to be the first person to complain, and do so loudly. If we were to be completely honest, many times I am seeking out books, movies, video games for the action. Action doesn’t always have to be violent, and I’m the first on...

Thoughts on Season 2 of Rings of Power and Wheel of Time

I’m not going to analyze episodes. In my opinion, the problem is both had bad writing. No shame if you’re enjoying them so far.

More than twenty years ago the Peter Jackson The Lord of the Rings Trilogy came out (2001-2003) and there were a bunch of copy cats which resulted in failed franchises. There were also other projects coming out around the same time that were their own thing (Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, Harry Potter)and I don’t mean failed franchises in that they didn’t make money ...

Marketing, Direct Sales and Evil Cultures

I did my first X (formerly Twitter) led advertisement online as I’ve done multiple online book tours and I’m not seeing much return. They’re fun but at the end of the day I don’t have endless hours to figure this stuff out. Promotion is necessary and I’m learning, my emphasis was always learn to write well and tell a story people would want to read. I think I’m 50% there as most people agree my prose is for the most part consistent, (and taste is subjective) it’s usually more along the lines wha...

Amoral or…?

Normally I would be chatting up New Projects but I failed to finish the second Puppeteer Book by the end of October. Blame the beautiful weather if you’d like, honestly it’s a combination of burnout and me focusing on getting the edits to Titan’s Ascent up to snuff.

It’s going fine I’ll likely be starting that swashbuckling project by the end of the year or early January. I’ve burned myself out physically before, but this is the first mental burnout where it’s taken a time for me to get over ...

Marketing, Minor Update

I am doing really well in the sequel to Puppetmaster 2, though I am tempted to veer hard right and do a completely different ending than the one I wrote oh, a year ago. I know: Shouldn’t take this long to write a sequel but I was editing the first book and MG so fixing/writing book 2 took a little longer. I may have a really rough draft done by the end of the month; I kind of like doing more editing in the winter and enjoying the weather while it’s nice out.

Kind of been a grey week so depres...

End of Summer, Thoughts on Noblebright

Summer always goes by too fast in Manitoba – I’m seeing pictures of freak snowstorms in Montana, so our weather is never guaranteed but it looks like it’ll be a beautiful first week in September at least locally. I started a new position doing the same thing only with On Call associated with it. I’ve been burnt out and dealing with some personal stuff – I’m doing better but it seems like I get one thing under control and something else starts coming off the rails.

Got two new pretty print boo...
