“How can you not love reading? It's wonderful. An excursion, an adventure... an escape from reality.' She adored reading and had a hard time grasping anyone not loving it.”

“Beyond that row was a double row of trees. Sam headed in that direction, Dad on her heels.
"Be careful of snakes."
That stopped her in her tracks. She could deal with a snarling dog. A hissing cat. Even a spitting ferret like her cousin Chris had, but she had the biggest fear if snakes. It didn't matter if it was a grass snake or a supposedly good snake that ate the poisonous snakes. In Sam's opinion, the only good snake was a dead snake. Dead and chopped up into little, itty, bitty pieces.

“Um, no. The thought of handling a gun terrifies me."
Sam burst out laughing.
"What's so funny?"
"You."
"What?"
Sam snorted. "You're scared of a gun, but you love karate, even when it wipes you out. You're a walking contradiction, girl."
"Guns kill people, Sam."
"No, people kill people. Guns are just a vehicle for those types. So are knives. And ropes. And even plastic bags. And yep, even martial arts."
"I'm not going to kill anybody. Stop being morbid."
Sam snorted again, "I didn't say you were. I was just pointing out that people associate guns with violence but not martial arts. Both can be just as deadly."
"True. Guess I never thought about it that way.”
