When I was collecting stereoscopic cards one of those that eluded me had this charming portrait of Emilio Aguinaldo and his son. This scene from daily life made me see Aguinaldo beyond the textbook.

Minted in 1897, the tail-end of the Spanish period, one peso silver coins bore the profile of King Alfonso as a boy hence these were known as "Alfonsinos." On the reverse these heavy and beautiful coins carried the Spanish coat of arms as well as the first and last time the name "Islas Filipinas" appeared in our coinage.
