Today, July 31 Feast of Ignatius Loyola reminded me of a memorable Intramuros visit with Ateneo students.

In San Agustin Museum, I pointed out four wonderful 18th century relleves of Jesuit saints, from the Luis Araneta collection. L to R: San Ignacio de Loyola, San Luis Gonzaga, San Estanislao Kostka and San Francisco Xavier. *thanks to the erudite Romeo Allianigue who corrected the earlier posting. The museum labels were inaccurate.

“These are the saints behind the names of the buildings in...

My Inquirer column today on revolutionary general Artemio Ricarte a.k.a. "Vibora" (The Viper) who started as a hero and ended up as a heel. Sometimes longevity is a disadvantage.

Historic prices on this Max's menu from the last century

Historic prices on this Max's menu from the last century.

The original Max's Restaurant served more than chicken. They obviously had an alcohol license because they had the following WINESs: Port, Fundador, Hennessy, Creme de Cacao, Blackberry Brandy, Campari. Even LIQUERS not on offer today: Benedictine, Chartreuse. Cointreau, Creme de Kirsch, Drambuie, Creme de Menthe, Kirswasser, Cherry hearing and Anis del Mono.

Diners ate in peace and quiet their menu states: "At Dinner and Luncheon time...

This is more than a bookshop for me

This is more than a bookshop for me. It reminds me of the owners, Frankie and Tessie Jose, who made me feel like a writer.

We can colorize better than this.
All photos of Rizal’s are in black-and-white this one from the early 20th century added too much rouge.

Next time I am in airport Duty Free I will look for this 19thC whiskey brand.
On 22 February 1892 Jose Rizal wrote to his cousin, Sixto Lopez, apologizing that he could not find the JOHN POWER AND SONS whiskey he ordered. He didn't dare to find a replacement, and asked Sixto to write him again for another brand.
I wonder if Rizal liked whiskey. I only take Suntory Yamazaki but am curious to try this brand referred to in Rizal's correspondence.
