I should watch them both again. Could be that I've simply experienced Colin Firth overkill because he is in sooooo many films. Which is not to say that I don't like him. I think he's an excellent actor. I would just prefer (after MI-5 and the Follett adaptations in particular) to see more Matthew Macfadyen, and I thought he saved the somewhat stupid movie.
I would always advocate watching the films. I do agree that MacFadyen managed to save what little of the movie could be saved. He actually played Darcy very well. But compared to Firth's portrayal I think he falls a bit short. The question then is not which actor portrayed Darcy best. I believe it is more honestly a question of which version was truer to the book. In which case, the BBC version wins, hands down. In fact, if MacFadyen had been given the chance to act in a production as excellent as the BBC production, I believe he would give Colin Firth a run for his money.
