Kallie Yes, I prefer Ehle as an actress but agree that she was too mature. I also think Firth's performance stereotyped, but also think highly of him as an actor. The truth is, I don't think any film version has nailed this story.

Renee E I wonder if it's more accurate to lay the "not-quite-got-it" on the writers doing the adaptations and the directors, rather than the actors following their scripts and the directors' directions?

Kallie Good points. And I think we should see more of the characters and place than is on the page, or what's the point of an adaptation. The difficulty is giving people more that is also convincing.

Renee E There's also more pressure to appeal to a broader audience with film, especially modern films with grabzillion $$ budgets, so the stories have to be made as accessible as possible.
