He didn't need to be dishonest to play the game with his own rules. He could have arrived to King's Landing and replaced several high officers of the guards with his northmen, balancing the Lannister guards with his own, secure his power without detriment of his honor. Those men wouldn't have been bought to turn against him by Littlefinger. He was the Hand of the King, he had enough power to make it happen in honorable ways. He could have made sure that he had all ends secure before talking to Cersei. He could have mistrusted Littlefinger!
Couldn't agree more with David. Doing right does not always mean doing whats best for you, thinking only about yourself. It means putting your principles first.
