I too admire this line. It's one of the best beginnings, to one of the best novels!
It's my favourite line, but you missed out an all-important word: 'single' man.
I love the humor in this line--and the truth of the times. Are we still in this mode of thinking? I hope not.

"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. " hooked from the get-go!
I love the humor in this line--and the truth of the times. Are we still in this mode of thinking? I hope not.
