Right you are. Bette did turn it down, because that year she was featured in Dark Victory, and believe me, if she wanted that role she would have had it. Bette fought for roles, and she got them. Another interesting fact, Katharine Hepburn was offered the role, but turned it down because she thought it wouldn't have been a good move in her career to play a selfish character. (Wasn't that such a long comment?)
Rumour has it Bette didn't turn it down as quoted above but actually was not allowed to do the movie by the studio.
