I was just going to mention him. "Temple" in particular but the Jack West Jr series might also appeal to you.
or the scarecrow series - book 5 in that just came out - its much more military thriller, whereas temple had more academic thriller in it (does that make sense)

That was my first thought but never finished "Temple"...just...not quite there although his style does look promising...maybe others of his books
