That's very subjective. Lord of the Rings is also epic, but there are a couple of big differences in ASOIAF's favour plot-wise.
The beginning of LotR is so awful! The Old Forest makes LotR worse then ASOIAF imo.
I disagree. LOTR is near unreadable. Such long and agonizingly pointless bits of narration. Far fewer POV's.
LOTR was written in a different time though, and it inspired nearly every bit of fantasy we encounter today. It is respected on that merit alone. I just can't stand reading it and would not recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good follow-up to ASOIAF.
