In some ways, that still makes Faraday a prime suspect, considering that he tried to marry her. He wanted to own her AND the house (though I really think she was incidental to his love affair with the house).
It seems the "ghost" haunts the members of the family by replaying some of their worst experiences. Fire in the case of Roderick burned during his RAF service. The death of a child from Diphtheria in the case of Mrs Ayres, the sounds from the nursery/kitchen communication tube being like the child's asphyxiation. So when the probable Lesbian Caroline calls "you" it maybe she sees a vision of the doctor, who has been trying desperately to marry her to gain the house and who may well have been repellent to her.
