Ferry Wever Hi all,

I'm Gram Rabbit (a.k.a. Ferry) from the Netherlands, married, 2 sons and a Fantasy / Science Fiction and a bit of Horror reader. I'm also a music lover (read listener), but that's another story.

I'm only reading again for a half year after a 15 year dip (read growing-up kids), so I have a lot to catch up with!
At the moment I'm reading a lot of dutch Fantasy / SF writers. ;)

If you want then I can keep you all updated on dutch Fantasy / SF writers who get translated into english.

message 2: by Wayland (new)

Wayland Smith Wayland Smith is my pen name. I read a lot, write a lot, and will happily talk books all day/night long.

I'm on the East Coast of the United States.

message 3: by Rinn (new)

Rinn I'm Rinn, from the UK. Always loved reading, especially sci-fi and fantasy (I blame my dad for the sci-fi bit).

I studied Archaeology at uni, and I'm off to do my Masters next year - in the Netherlands, @Gram Rabbit =D

message 4: by Freya (new)

Freya I'm Freya, from England too and like Rinn I've always loved reading, particularly fantasy, but as I like sci-fi and fantasy films (family blamed/thanked there) I'm also edging my way into reading more sci-fi too :)

I studied Archaeology at uni and will be starting a completely unrelated job in September.

message 5: by Nic (new)

Nic Margett Hello, I'm Nic and i live in Glasgow, Scotland. I try to read 50 books a year, mostly sci-fi and fantasy but other genres too. I don't have many friends that are avid readers, especially not sci-fi, so i joined goodreads to find like minded people to read books with and get some recommendations from.

My main passion is music, but books come a close second!

message 6: by Rinn (new)

Rinn Ooh, what kind of music, Nic? =)

message 7: by Ferry Wever (last edited Jun 23, 2013 03:25AM) (new)

Ferry Wever @Rinn In wich town are you going to study?
@Nic What kind of music? (Same question as Rinn.)

btw I've updated my first introduction post. ;)

message 8: by Rinn (new)

Rinn Leiden - either next February or September. My place is officially for February but I may defer it in order to save more money.

message 9: by Nic (new)

Nic Margett I'm into all kinds of music really, mostly metal and dance, but i listen to everything from folk, classical, rock, reggae & dub, world music to things like ambient drone and noise. The only things i don't really like are pop and R&B.
I'm an avid collector of books, but my biggest collection at home is my CD and vinyl collection. Moving house is always a nightmare!

message 10: by Rinn (new)

Rinn Do you use Last FM, by any chance?

message 11: by Nic (new)

Nic Margett I used to until i got an ipod, the scrobbler never works properly for itunes, plus the fact i listen to lots of music on vinyl as well means that my chart didn't reflect my listening habits like i wished it would!

message 12: by Rinn (new)

Rinn Hmm, I haven't had any issues with the iTunes scrobbler, wonder why that is.

But yes, it'll be less than accurate then! We still have lots of vinyl in this house, but nothing to play it on =/

Here is my Last FM profile if you are interested... varied as you can see.

message 13: by Nic (new)

Nic Margett It's probably due to my 8 year old desktop rather than anything else. It works okay while i listen on the computer itself, but i very seldom do that, it's the ipod scrobbles that never seem to work, i can play hundreds of tracks and it will only pick out about 20 at a time. I've just added you to my profile, low compatibility! i see you have a varied taste though!

message 14: by Anya (new)

Anya Hello, sorry to interrupt the music discussion ;-) I'm Anya, I'm a graduate student studying computer science and evolutionary biology. I've been a huge sci-fi and fantasy fan for as long as I can remember due to my parents. My dad read me The Hobbit and LOTR when I was sick ;-).

I'm also a blogger at http://www.onstarshipsanddragonwings.com so reading has become my obsession and I'm aiming for 100 books this year. I'm really excited for this group and am hoping for something that focuses a bit more on a smaller group of book lovers discussing bookish topics instead of the promo storm that a lot of the groups seem to be whenever I search D: Is that along the lines of what everyone else was thinking of?

message 15: by Rinn (last edited Jun 23, 2013 09:44AM) (new)

Rinn Welcome Anya! I remember finding your blog shortly after I started mine, and being excited to find one just for fantasy and sci-fi - there aren't many out there.

Yep, that's what I was aiming for! Maybe when the group gets larger we can make it invite only or something, so only people who are definitely interested in discussing join.

message 16: by Freya (new)

Freya @Gram Rabbit - keeping us updated on translations from Dutch SF and Fantasy authors would be cool as I am sure there are probably loads of great books out there that I've never heard of.

message 17: by Ferry Wever (new)

Ferry Wever Welcome all!

@Freya Do you know smashwords?
If you do, type in dutch fantasy a few of those unpublished writers also translate there stories in english. Take a Jack Broscie.

message 18: by Megan (new)

Megan Earley Hi,
My name is Megan, and I'm from Oregon, married, with three girls. I enjoy pretty much any genre, but I'm partial to Science Fiction and Fantasy.
I'm a part time writer full time student right now.

message 19: by Rinn (new)

Rinn Welcome Megan! =)

message 20: by Freya (new)

Freya Welcome everyone! :)

@Gram Rabbit - no I haven't been on smash words, I'll have to take a look :)

message 21: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Hello guys! I'm lauren from California, US. I love Fantasy and Scifi (especially if it's steampunk). Just graduated from college for Media arts and animation. Can't wait to read along with you guys. =)

message 22: by Nick (new)

Nick Hello Everyone! I'm Nick from Ontario, Canada. I love both SciFi and Fantasy books (especially post-apocalyptic). Ive graduated with a history degree and working as a supply teacher in Ontario. I have had trouble choosing books lately and hope that maybe this group will focus my recently sporadic reading. Can't wait to read and discuss with everyone!

message 23: by John (new)

John Hi Everyone, I'm John from Pennsylvania. I love sci-fi and magic realism mainly...I'm currently reading Murakami's 1Q84. I occasionally dip into Fantasy and Horror as well, if I'm feeling adventurous :)

message 24: by Stephan (new)

Stephan Loy Hi! I'm Stephan Loy, from Indianapolis, Indiana. I'm a big fan of science fiction, speculative fiction, and fantasy. I'm also a writer of same. Not to put too fine a point on it, but you can find my work on the Kindle Store (my ancient Egyptian fantasy, Isis Wept, is free this week if you want). I read a wide assortment of work. Presently going through William Gibson's work (marvelously visionary work there). When both my boys were very young, I read them The Lord of the Rings, all four books in a row, as bedtime stories.

message 25: by Freya (new)

Freya Hello and welcome everyone :)

message 26: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty Cabot Hi! Im Kirsty Caddy. Graduated with a degree in Archaeology last year. I live in Reading, UK. I love museums, currently work in one part time. I also love sci-fi and fantasy books, though i've tended to steer towards to fantasy so looking forward to getting some more sci-fi in my life!

message 27: by Lucy (new)

Lucy Hi, (thanks for the invite Freya!) I'm Lucy, 4th-year IR student in the UK, got into sci-fi after studying a course about science fiction and politics, and I think it's a really underrated genre when it comes to important ideas, and that's why I like it. Favourite so far has been Brave New World and next will read The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi... right after I finish the very un-sci-fi Room With A View :)

message 28: by Freya (new)

Freya Hehe yay you're here! :)

message 29: by Rinn (new)

Rinn Welcome, Kirsty and Lucy =D

message 30: by Pearl (new)

Pearl Hey guys, I’m Pearl from the Wisconsin, US. I really like to read and write. I was always really into YA, but then I took a Sci Fi literature class in college and found out that I really love it, which also got my hooked on fantasy. I’m a student right now, majoring in business management, and have double minors in psychology and creative writing. I love reading, the only two things I MIGHT love more are writing and dogs. :) I can’t guarantee that I’ll read every book every month, just because my college life tends to take up most of my time. Also if I do read, I literally will do nothing else until I finish the book I’m reading, which isn’t really a good thing if I have essays and tests to do, but I’ll do my best. How do I find out what June’s book is? Or was, since June’s almost over? I’m just curious as to what it was.

message 31: by Rinn (new)

Rinn Pearl wrote: "How do I find out what June’s book is? Or was, since June’s almost over? I’m just curious as to what it was. "

We only started the group less than a week ago, so our first Book of the Month will be July - there is currently a poll on the group homepage to decide =)

Also, welcome!

message 32: by Gracia (new)

Gracia Marie-Jose Hey, people:) I'm Grace

message 33: by Rinn (new)

Rinn Welcome, Grace!

Lucy Pearl wrote: "Hey guys, I’m Pearl from the Wisconsin, US. I really like to read and write. I was always really into YA, but then I took a Sci Fi literature class in college and found out that I really love it, w..."

Hi Pearl, I discovered sci-fi in the same way, I didn't really have much interest in it before, then when I had to read it for university I found out how good it was. I wish a lot of my other politics friends had taken the class because they are so sceptical about it (like I was!) Welcome to the group!

message 35: by Sinead (new)

Sinead Hi guys, I'm Sinéad from Greystones in Ireland. I'm also an avid reader, more particularly fantasy but have read quite a few sci-fi too. Blame Lord of the Rings when I was 12. I'm always keen to find new authors and characters.

message 36: by Freya (new)

Freya Welcome Pearl, Grace and Sinead! :)

message 37: by Nick (new)

Nick Hey all,

I'm from Leicestershire in the UK and I am just finishing off my masters in classical history and archaeology. I've always loved fantasy, but I'm not so big on sci-fi (literature, anyway). I'm currently nearing the end (book 8) of Steven Erikson's 10 book Malazan Book of the Fallen, which I'd seriously recommend if anybody has the time to invest.

I have read The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man's Fear before - fantastic choice, by the way! - so I may drop in for the discussions every now and then as I want to re-read them soon but I'll be sure to keep it spoiler free!

Cheers,
Nick

message 38: by Rinn (new)

Rinn Belated welcome to Nick, and welcome Darren! 99& humidity sounds horrendous...

message 39: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Hi, My name is Jennifer and I am 41 from Buffalo NY.I owe my love of reading to my father who thought I could read anything he did if I showed I understood it. So I was reading Heinlein, Varley, And Robinson in the 7 th and 8th grades. I still trade books back and forth, I just got him started on the Wheel of Time series.
I dabbled in fantasy until I met my fiancee and he got me into Xanth, Dragonlance, And the Forgotten Realms.
Coincidentally, I just started The Name of the Wind a few days ago!

message 40: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Oh My. I just looked at the total on my to read list. Two hundred and eighty one. What have I done??

message 41: by Rinn (new)

Rinn Oh, the 'to-read' list! It's a nightmare! I've been trying to keep mine under 250 - every time it drops below I add something else. It will always hover around that number, I feel ;)

message 42: by Freya (new)

Freya I've completely given up on my to-read list, it's an out of control beast! :S :D

message 43: by Wayland (new)

Wayland Smith I work off several lists, and they're all too big. I just keep pushing on best I can. Speaking of, off to work on that!

message 44: by Rinn (new)

Rinn Darren wrote: "I'm thinking of erasing my want to read list. I never look through it, and it never gets smaller. Nor does anyone's, as far as I can tell."

Every so often I go through mine and think 'Will I ever really read that?' - managed to crop it down by quite a bit so far, that of course does not mean that it is manageable as it is!

message 45: by Vincent (new)

Vincent Asaro Hi! I'm a published SF-F author, joined recently but have been way too busy to have any fun here :)

message 46: by Rinn (new)

Rinn Welcome Vincent! Have you checked out the choices for next month's book? =)

message 47: by Vincent (new)

Vincent Asaro Rinn wrote: "Welcome Vincent! Have you checked out the choices for next month's book? =)"

I'm enjoying reading the discussions but unfortunately I don't have time to read-along right now :) I'm doing research for a new novel on top of a heap of other stuff. But hopefully later in the year I'll be able to jump on :)

message 48: by Bee (new)

Bee Hello!

I'm Britt and I am absolutely hooked on the fantasy genre. Especially high fantasy. Seriously, if I could choose between air and a good fantasy book, the latter would be the one I'd go with. I'm kind of suspicious about romantic fantasy, though. Actually, scratch that, I'm very suspicious about it.
On the side note, I'm 17 and from Estonia! Most of my time is occupied by high school but I manage to squeeze in a few books here and there.

Cheers!

message 49: by Rinn (new)

Rinn Me too, Britt - I think romantic fantasy often forgets the fantasy part... not a big romance fan at all, here.

message 50: by Bee (new)

Bee I agree. I'm all good with fantasy with a side of romance but the other way around just doesn't work out.
