Max Ingram Is anyone here a fan of comic books and graphic novels (i.e. those pesky illustrated pulps that lead youth astray)? Because if so, I recently read a very good series of graphic novel collections that feature a strong, action heroine lead.

Starting with 'Thor, Vol.1: The Goddess of Thunder' and continuing through a series of 7 trade paperback collections, the character of Jane Foster--an E.R. doctor romantically tied to the traditional, male Thor--finds herself chosen to wield the power of the hammer when the prior owner no longer can.

In an interesting twist, Jane is suffering from cancer when this occurs, and the power of Thor's hammer temporarily imbues her with strength and vitality to fight the ills of the world, but she also finds herself weakened after wielding it, because its power cleanses her body of all poisons--which ironically includes her chemotherapy treatments. So, she must balance her responsibilities as defender of the weak against her own sense of self-preservation, as each time she wields the hammer she also finds herself a step closer to death.

I found it be a fantastic series and truly engaging from start to finish. It was also cool that once it concluded, they spun the character off into an additional series in which she inherits a new identity and new powers as the character named Valkyrie (which is also an excellent series).

Here are all the volumes involved & the order they should be read:
- Thor, Vol.1: The Goddess of Thunder
- Thor, Vol. 2: Who Holds the Hammer?
*
- Mighty Thor, Vol. 1: Thunder in Her Veins
- Mighty Thor, Vol. 2: Lords of Midgard
- Mighty Thor, Vol. 3: The Asgard/Shi'ar War
- Mighty Thor, Vol. 4: The War Thor
- Mighty Thor, Vol. 5: The Death of The Mighty Thor
*
- Valkyrie: Jane Foster Vol 1: The Sacred and the Profane
- Valkyrie: Jane Foster Vol 2: At the End of All Things

Mervi I've read the first two volumes and really enjoyed them. I hope to get Marvel Unlimited and read the rest.

Max Ingram Cool! I'm currently reading the TPB collection for the 'Jane Foster & The Mighty Thor' mini-series / spin-off comic. It's been really good so far, too. They keep managing to find cool stories to tell about this character.
