Ian Beardsell Crime/mysteries are one genre I've never had much luck with...I should probably try harder.

Ian "Marvin" Graye It might be worth starting/resuming with Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. They're more than just crime writers.

Thanks guys. I have heard of Chandler, but not Hammett, I see he wrote the Maltese Falcon. If I see either around I will grab them.

Geoff Wooldridge I haven't managed to track this one down - it's on my list. I heartily endorse the recommendation to try Chandler - he is terrific. Hammett is also good in a similar crime noir style.

Mitchell I did find it amusing how much this book sticks to the trope that a highly homicide detective’s personal life must be a mess. The police detectives I’ve met have all had pretty normal family lives!

Agree. "...a bit too convoluted" for the sake of a story.
