I appreciate the feedback, sorry you didn't like the ending! I made a point to add subtle hints throughout showing Adrian's annoyance with Kendra intending for his character to use her just as she used him but I guess it didn't come through that way for you. Hopefully you'll give future titles a chance and I can deliver something with an ending that feels more satisfying!
Ouchhhhh two stars for that !?!?
I was expecting them to run off into the sunset... but clearly adrian was just more effed up than we thought!
I'm enamoured by this idea that even deeply disturbed people can snuggle at the bottom of an abyss, be kindred in pain. However I'm repeatedly rebutted by authors condemning the ideas, even if i have hope. I got mixed messages because i feel this story is near those motifs.
That egregious scene feels more like cleaning house, than a fitting end for Kendra. Her end in the downtime between people who deserve it. Shw deserved an end but not like the others, the others chose to be despicable, she was corrupted by it.
I went back and looked for clues that led to Adrian's decision. Adrian's swareness of Kendra's apparent latching is brought up twice but I don't feel it's a good reason to make her the penultimate victim. His pitiful past is so interesting to her because her past is just as pitiful; common past experiences enable people to create bonds. Author, are you suggesting that kind of interest is unhealthy or that the perverse side of it unhealthy? She enabled him to becoming more monstrous just as he enabled her perverse desires. Is that grounds for execution? How dare she accelerate his descent? Kendra, a damaged person, definitely should've done better.
Theoretical options
1. Kendra having second thoughts: putting down the monster she created after she uses Adrian to get rid of her mother
2. Kendra getting pregnant with Adrian's child: Adrien might be disgusted that his progeny would repeat the cycle
3. Kendra climbs out of the hole or disagree with Adrien on future direction: Adrian ends her bwcause the only way left os down
4. Kendra becomes the final victim: she's the instigator of Adrian's murder spree and the road ends with Adrian.
Kendra is the ultimate support character in that she catalyzes Adrian's final descent into becoming a literal monster. Until they met, he was content with his morbid fixations. Her showing up triggered an excitement in him that made him feel as though he was finally actually wanted. His realization of her interest in him broke him more than any bullying or abuse ever could have. His decision to help her was a selfish one. His interest in her that started as a real excitement fizzled to non-existence when he realized she didn't actually care about him but was instead interested in what he was capable of given their similar pasts. Adrian wanted to love her but also recognized that she was an honest to god psychopath and was therefore incapable of truly caring for someone, which is all he ever wanted. Her death was swift because he felt she at least didn't deserve to suffer. The rat is the man who broke Adrian's home. Kendra is the one who broke Adrian himself.
