Last night, I finished rereading What the Butler Saw and turned to a science fiction novel by Kim Stanley Robinson that I'm in the middle of, but I found that the play had warped my mind. I kept trying to interpret KSR's sentences from the play’s perspective of twisted logic, irrepressible obsessions with clothing, sex, and cross-dressing, institutional lunacy, drug- and alcohol-addled minds, immovably absurd authority figures, the private parts of famous public personages… KSR's novel is resolutely sane, but not so sane that it could move my mind off the Orton track. I had to put down the novel and turn the light out.
