Pax I appreciate the time you invested to respond. But it is not a "feeling," it is a fact. I wrote "despite your intent." This book used the crutch of racial stereotypes as a plot device to explore hurt and comfort themes. Your response amounts to "because I wanted to", and that has been used to justify the monetization and harm to black/brown bodies for centuries. I know it may be difficult to understand because you are not directly harmed by representational racism. Indeed, this book and your response indicates a lack of understanding of how certain racial groups' representation in popular culture encapsulates an array of racist ideas (but not a lack of empathy). That being said, I thank you for the opportunity to address my issues with this novel. I'm not trying to silence your voice but sharpen your gaze. I'm writing about this, because I think you are an excellent writer, with a gift of capturing emotion and love, so this subject, this plot with this MC (when you don't typically incorporate POC in your novels) was jarring. Just look at your Amazon page and see your books lined up - it's an incongruous dissonance. I hope you re-read with an open heart and mind and think deeply on the issues of unconscious bias and ask yourself "why this book?" "why this story?" "why this man?" "why this image?" "what is its impact on the reader"? "what am I perpetuating?" Also, take some time to review: https://www.sapiens.org/column/race/c...

Karla I think it is a tragic reality and not this author's "will" that the American justice system often treats POC differently (=harsher). As the author writes, "Had he been Caucasian, I think his story would have been different." And that is exactly the answer to all of your questions (Why this book, story, man, image…) Yes this plot with this MC was jarring. Because reality is jarring.

noe But this is the reality? How black people are treated differently than white people

Dreamcastle100 Thanks to such questions I understand, why authors write so little about not white people. Because it still be your fault in any case. In any case you will be guilted in racism. Whatever you wright. Still on point of view of wokes you will be wrong.
My sympathies to the poor authors.
And lessons to nexts - do not write about black, asian, arabs etc, you see, you see what this led to.
