Bella (Kiki) Thank you for your answer.

I wasn't aware that PLAYING FOR THE ASHES was your longest, but it was the first I read, and I was hooked. It remains one of my favorites, along with JUST ONE EVIL ACT.

As for the darkness, that is part of the reason I read the books. I love the darkness of them. I also fell in love with the characters, particularly Lynley and Barbara. Barbara's misadventures do add levity, but to me, they seem a little sad, since she is so alone in life and faces so many trials.

I try to read your books slowly because I don't want my time with them to end. I've begun rereading.
