If you don't mind me tagging on a follow-up question, how do you go about letting your characters "decide"? I've always been fascinated by this concept, because of how tricky it is to pull off. I'm thinking that it's mostly letting your intuition tug you along once you've thoroughly fleshed out the character and their world. So basically, what does the process look like for you, and any tips about it? Many thanks! ^_^
I think it's similar to the way you've described it, "letting your intuition tug you along once you've thoroughly fleshed out the character and their world." It's sort of like another version of "pantsing" as opposed to plotting!
This is how it works for me:
There are so many details I just CAN'T SEE at the beginning of a story, because I feel as though I have to travel WITH the character through their story in order to discover exactly how he/she will respond in certain situations. A tip would be that you definitely need to know beforehand what kind of characters you're working with. You need to know their personalities and their backstories etc so that the decisions they end up making along the way are consistent with who they are.
