Inna I agree. And the atmosphere is pretty amazing.

Petra X The people are split almost 50/50 between Greek Orthodox and Muslims. They are a very moderate people who all get on well. Jews fled there during the Holocaust and had no issues until after the war. The history of Jews there has no element of them being the elite and Muslims the ordinary people. My family are (a few generations back) from Khazakstan.

Inna I am confused. Are you talking about the Khazar kingdom? Or about Kazakhstan?

Saikat Are you sure that 'Muslim' is the correct identity to use for the Khazars, although they may have been so at a time. Is there a link between the Hazaras of the Central Afghanistan uplands, who were a marooned Mongol population, and the Khazars, who may have been the main body of their band that may have moved westwards?
