Flowerscat Thank you for sharing :) I didn't get a notification from goodreads about your reply, so I have just stumbled upon it! I really loved all the extra detail in the book - it brings a real touch of gritty realism to the storyline. Were you worried that some readers might be put off by the darker details in the book? Is choosing a topic a compromise between what you want to write, and what you think the readers might want to read?

Cari Hunter No worries, I'm always late finding questions and comments - GR doesn't notify me with any consistency either!

I do worry about putting readers off, especially when lesbian fiction in general is quite a lighthearted, fluffy romance genre, but I've always written the kind of books I like to read which is the main reason I skipped away from romantic action/adventure-type stories (Snowbound and Desolation Point) and towards crime. A more sensible author would undoubtedly have stuck to the formula that worked for their readership - those two books are my best sellers - but that's where the compromise would have come in, which I suppose answers the second part of your question. Would it have been easy to rinse, repeat, redo Snowbound time after time? Yep. Would I have been happy doing it? No. I'd have been bored witless. Richer, but bored witless. So, while I might worry and fret that readers will find my books too dark, or not romantic enough, or too English, I don't tend to stymie myself as a result. And, so far at least, there's a fair few folks who've hopped on for the ride. I never expected the Dark Peak books to do as well, nor be as well received, and it shows that there is an appetite amongst the lesbian readership for books that mess with some of the standard tropes.
