Ann Dzuik Wanting to be addressed by the more formal "Mr." or "Mrs." is not only about self-perception. It is also a cultural distinction. Raised in the South, for a child to address an adult by their first name was considered rude, as was using the first name of any adult one did not know on a personal basis. It was a matter of respect.
