Read memoirs, like Frank McCourt's "Angela's Ashes" in which McCourt uses his child's voice to tell his story. It's the best, most interesting, memoir I've read so far.
Reading your book out loud is the best way to find out what the reader will experience. Of course, once you've heard it from the best you don't need me to tell you that :)
