Well that's cool. Thanks for taking the time to answer such a trivial question! FWIW, here is some pipe trivia if you ever want to use any of it to add a little worldbuilding color -
Pipe tobacco is like wine, it comes in a staggering variety of flavors and blends, it ranges wildly from super cheap stuff to extremely expensive, and it benefits from aging n similar ways because the sugars break down and it mellows and intensifies in flavor. You can buy bags of cheap pipe tobacco at the drugstore or spend $150+ for a small tin of 20yo fine Virginia.Personal preference in tobacco says something about a character's tastes and means.
The LOTR movie pipes were some of the worst examples of "adventuring" pipes ever. Long churchwardens are inherently brittle, fragile, cumbersome, they don't fit in pockets, and are 99% of the time smoked at home because no one wants to travel with the freaking things. If someone is taking a pipe traveling, it's going to be a cheap corncob or similar, which can be replaced easily if it breaks, or something small and sturdy, and probably with a shank band of some sort to resist breakage during monster battles.
Pipes are both mass-manufactured by factories and individually carved by artisans like myself. Artisan pipes are way more expensive but also totally individual and personal, and are often commissions made for gifts or other personal meaning. A character's choice in pipes again says a lot about their personal preferences and financial means.
Sorry for the flood of info, but, it is my job :D If you ever have specific pipe & tobacco-related questions, just drop me a PM here and I'll be happy to help! If you are curious to see some of my work, you can check it out here- http://www.talbertpipes.com/talbert.s...
