185 BTW Ravyn, there is a companion series to the recommendation for Patricia Briggs's Mercy Thompson series that was recommended by Lily. ( Moon Called is the first book in this series.)

The second series is called Alpha and Omega and it interweaves with the Mercy series. There is a timeline at http://www.patriciabriggs.com/books/t... to show the order to read the various books in. Cry Wolf is the "first" book in the Alpha and Omega series, and some of the copies have the short story that actually introduces the series. The short story is (or at least was) also available in an anthology AND as a stand alone short story. Alpha & Omega is the title of that short story.

185 Muhammad,

Please go up to One book, Unsolved and list your book. Put as much (non spoiler ) information in the title as you can. Be sure to include the genre--Literary/Sci-fi-/non-fiction etc. then list what you remember about the book.

If you know the title, but are trying to find out where to buy the book, that's something that we really don't help with a great deal. All we can do is suggest "the usual suspects"--Amazon, B&N, used bookshops, Goodwiil/Salvation Army etc.
185 Beast Behaving Badly PNR, has a fair bit of humour in it. (At least, I giggle like crazy every time that I read it--and I think I've read it about 5 times.)
185 Could it have been one of the Cat Who books? The Cat Who Could Read Backwards is the first one in the series. The male MC is a journalist. I think I stopped reading the series about book 10 or so, and I know that he'd moved to a small town for a while after inheriting some money. But it's been at least a decade and a half since I read the last one, so my memory is rather vague on details of the series.
185 The Ghost in the Third Row possibly? This is one of a trilogy, I believe with the MC being a 6th grade girl named Nina Tanleven, who is teased by others she knows calling her Nine Ten 'Leven as a play on her name.
185 I sent Cece a PM to see if she is still interested in finding this book or not.
185 Cece--how sure are you that this wasn't part of an anthology set in some kind of fantasy world (just no magic in this particular story?)

It has some elements of a short story that is set in one of the anthologies of Andre Norton's Witch World series. There are a fair number of them that don't have magic in them, and from what I can remember, the story that this is similar to is one of those--except that the MC is referred to as a giant or troll or something similar because of his size. There are a few books (about 30 or so) that are set in this world, including a few that are true anthologies, where other writers do stories that are set in the Witch World. Tales of the Witch World 1 is one of those books. There are, I believe 4 books with that title, just the number changing. Unfortunately, the story titles aren't listed in the GR click. (Note to self--get to work and actually organize your books again so that you can go in and list the story titles. Not having them is just getting annoying.)

Anyway, check out those and see maybe you were conflating 2 different stories with the setting and the potatoes.

185 Nina Bangs writes a lot of lighter PNRs although they tend to be NC17 rated I Think, (been a while since I read any) One Bite Stand has a non-ugly harpy and her (also non-ugly and very rare, male twin) as 2 of the main characters. And then there is A Taste of Darkness (which was actually the first one of Ms. Bangs books I read--and I got it because of the back blurb and the blurb just inside the cover. I'm not sure I got the correct cover for the "good" description. Also, she has 2 recurring character in a couple of her series who are named Sparkle Stardust and Ganymede who are Cosmic Troublemakers>.

185 A YA/NA series with one book that fits this theme is the Accidental series by Emily Evans. The book with this theme is Accidental Heiress. They are "clean" (no sex, very little kissing even) so "safe" for teens. The MC's tend to be 18 to 19 years old.

185 Essential Beginnings is the first book in a series that is taking place during the eruption of the super-volcano formerly known as Yellowstone National Park. There are, I think 4 books in the series (could be 5) and they are romances.

A novella/short story series that is romance and is set 50 years in the future after terrorist bomb everything back to 19th century levels is called After the Crash by Maddy Barone (first book Sleeping With the Wolf). She has recently started a series featuring the kids of the characters from that series.

If you like sci-fi, check out the series Lords of the Middle Dark by Jack L. Chalker. This series is set way in the future, after an apocalypse caused by a computer.

The Spawn of The Death Machine is another one set far in the future after yet another computer destroys civilization. This one is probably going to be hard to find, as it was published in 1968 and re-released some time in the middle 70's.

I have a "thing" for book covers from the 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's. So I have read a lot of books that predate my learning to read. I have others that I can't remember the titles of right now, but I'm not really going to do a lot of looking for them, since a lot of them haven't been re-released in decades.
185 Lords of the Middle Dark is the first book in a sci-fi series where the ship that they steal is piloted by a sentient AI who picks his/her/its own name.

The Misenchanted Sword while the sword isn't exactly intelligent or anything, the enchantment placed on it makes it an interesting "character".
185 Petrel is showing as not having been active since Sept. of 2015.

I have sent her a message to see if she is still interested in finding her book.

185 Dying Bites series by D.D. Barant is an interesting UF series. The MC is an FBI profiler who is "kidnapped" by magic into an alternate universe because that universe needs her skills as a profiler of serial killers and other nasty types. It was definitely an interesting idea.

The Reluctant Swordsman is another "kidnapped into another universe by magic" type UF series.
185 How Much for Just the Planet? since you like ST:TNG I thought I'd suggest a "classic" ST book. This one always has me giggling when I read it.

185 You might also check out Patricia Briggs 2 interconnecting series, Mercy Thompson and Alpha and Omega. They are more UF than PNR. But, again, the main female has only one love interest.

For Steampunk, you might check out The Iron Duke Although this isn't set in the typical Victorian time period, rather it's set in what in our world was the Regency period. However this world is totally different from ours. In this world Genghis Khan did NOT stop his sweep across the known world, rather he continued and conquered all of Europe. He did it by using what is essentially a steampunk version of nanobots. This series does feature different couples for each book (and several short stories.) Definitely NOT YA, but could be considered NA I guess.

185 A couple of books by Anne McCaffrey

The Ship Who Sang and it's companion The Ship Who Searched The second book always has me sobbing in the first few chapters. It does get happier after that, but those first few chapters. . . And I think I've read it about a dozen times.

185 The Forgotten Door

Witch World It's a stone rather than a door, but would that work?

Steel Magic YA or possibly for tweens. It's been a really long time since I read it, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

The Gate of Ivory sci-fi rather than fantasy. But there is magic sort of.
185 Mina Carter's Warriors of the Lathar #1-6 (compilation of 6 titles) has aliens and this trope

Maddy Barone's After the Crash series also has this trope, but it's a time travel one. A plane from 2014 crash lands in 2064 (I think that's it) and the survivors discover that the day they took off terrorists ignited nuclear bombs in most of the major cities of the world. Then there were several natural disasters (earthquakes, asteroid of the very large size smashing into Texas etc) and finally a (possibly man made) plague that killed off 80% of the females and made it extremely difficult to conceive female children.

I know that I've read several others, but can't think of their titles right now, and I've got a book or five (thousand) in my GR book list.
185 Heist Society is the first book in a series about a girl who's family are all thieves. She's conned her way into a major boarding school to try to escape her family, except. . . She has to rescue her Father from the FBI and a major crime figure. I believe that there is a crossover between this series and either the Gallagher Girls or The Squad.

Touch of Frost is another one set in a school with the mc a girl.

I tried to stick to YA books since you were looking for a school library.
185 Terrorbelle the Unconquered Terrorbelle the Unconquered by Patrick Thomas

and the ever popular

Fairy with a Gun: The Collected Terrorbelle Fairy with a Gun The Collected Terrorbelle by Patrick Thomas

Podcasting for Dummies

Billibub Baddings and the Case of the Singing Sword Billibub Baddings and the Case of the Singing Sword by Tee Morris (This book is great--a dwarf (the JRR Tolkien kind, not the small person kind) goes against Capone. . . .)
