"It's not an interrogation." Min-jung snapped back without missing a beat, wondering for a split second why such a flippant statement made her feel so... offended. It's not like this boy meant anything to her (other than general disgust and dislike). It's not even like he was cute (okay, he was, but that voice).

And how was it that he didn't know who she was? Twenty years and three months? Holy shit, first of all, did he keep track of the months he'd been alive? What an asshole. Second of all, okay, maybe Min-jung had been a little rash. Maybe she'd gotten a little too much with her conspiracy theorist role. Maybe she should be a decent human being an apologize. But.

But. She wasn't sorry. "Besides, who the fu—heck doesn't know the name of the person they give tours to? You're part of the welcoming committee? Oh, that's rich. Also, you're the one who interrogated me first, dumbass, so don't try to get out of this by pinning it on the short girl."

He had been the asshole first. And with that travesty of a voice, she sure as hell wasn't going to let him get the best of her.

"Are you sure it's not the other way around? It's not every day you get to be pinned below a pretty girl," Alex retorted— or at least, tried to, as she played a game she was all too familiar with called, how do I disentangle my limbs from his limbs without being flipped over again.

Seeing how a good portion of her legs were pinned under his back, it took an extraordinary amount of strength for her to get her upper body off of his— although she wasted no time going for a throat jab once she succeeded.

Sure, it was harder to fight now that they were both on the ground, but so long as Alex remained on top of Jaehyun (and not the other way around), she had a fighting chance. She feinted, and then feinted again, and then suddenly wrapped her arms around Jaehyun's neck, dropping all her body weight onto the mat, finally pulling her legs free.

She had won. Rolling smoothly into a sitting position, the neck grab adjusted itself into a nice headlock, and Alex was sitting pretty on a blue mat with her commander tucked nicely under the crook of her arm.

"Just so you know, you look so much better from this angle."

Hyun-woo was trying really hard not to stare as Matthew carefully took out his school(?)-related supplies and placed them on the table in front of them— and miserably failed (why was there so much stuff?) It's not like Hyun-woo hadn't heard some of the rumors about his partner, of course— something about "a bit of a control freak" and "very prepared", but he had thought that they were over-exaggerated (they weren't).

Which all made Hyun-woo feel a little guilty, because he had come here expecting to have it easy. For fuck's sake, he hadn't even brought a pencil (although that didn't seem to be that much of a problem, since his project partner had seven). Hyun-woo liked group projects, because what would usually happen was that he'd be attacked by a gaggle of girls who would be more than happy to do all the work and send it to Hyun-woo the night before, asking him to "look it over" and make sure "everything was fine", which it usually was. But.

The partner for this physics project had been. assigned. And well. That meant Hyun-woo had to put on his big boy shoes, get off of his lazy ass and buckle down to work.

And he was planning to do just that, really. Right after— "Hey, sorry— do you think I could borrow a pencil?" — he could make up for his lack of supplies, that is.

"It's Min-jung," Min-jung snapped. "What kind of welcomer are you— not even knowing the name of the girl you're giving the tour to. God."

Did he seriously not know who she was? Was that even possible? Maybe he was an alien. This was a international space academy, after all. Or— even worse, he could be one of those home school freaks. Oh my god, did he even know what a television was? Did he know tabloids existed? Maybe he had spent the first sixteen years of his life cut off from the rest of the human world and— nope, that was just the plotline of the show that aired in the slot before hers.

Still, it's not like those kinds of stories didn't exist in real life. She didn't understand how he didn't know her. Ellie Kim!!!! He honestly didn't have an excuse, now that she thought about it. If he was from like, Russia or something, it would make sense, but he was Korean. Every Korean knew Ellie Kim. She was practically a household name. So then— how—

Min-jung stared very intently at this boy, stepping closer to him in her four inch platforms, deciding to forget about manners or dignity to try and get a good look at his face because— "Then why the hell did you ask me all those questions? What was I supposed to think? Do you think you're being funny? Do you seriously not know who I am? Are you an alien? Are you actually Korean?"

Ryan's brain said, Fuckshit, you're late. But Ryan's mouth said, "Nonono— I nearly just killed you it's the least I could do."

Well, fuck. Oh well— now that Ryan thought about it, being marked absent probably wasn't as bad as being marked tardy for the 22nd time. Who needed physics, anyway? Engineers, physics teachers... Yep, that was it. Suddenly, it seemed straight up stupid that Ryan had been so worried about physics just a minute ago. He looked at the boy (What was his name?) in front of him and grinned excitedly. "Okay, let's go check out your ship."

He typed in the passcode into engine room and led the boy in through the huge double doors. Moving through the unwieldy machinery with ease, Ryan suddenly stopped in front of what he assumed was the boy's spaceship, aka the only intact spaceship in the room. "Wow." Ryan had been told his entire life he fell in love with people too easily, but what most people failed to notice was that Ryan also fell in love with spaceships too easily as well.

"What's her name?" He asked, biting his tongue so he wouldn't ask the more important and pressing question— What's yours?

M O O N [ 003918 ] H Y U N - W O O
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
tᴡᴇɴᴛʏ · sᴛᴇᴘʜᴇɴsᴏɴ · eɴɢɪɴᴇᴇʀ

Everyone wants to be friends with The Pretty Boy, better known at INSA as Moon Hyun-woo. If you don’t know him, you have to admit you’re kind of in love with him. If you do know him, you have to admit you’re more than kind of in love with him.

Hyun-woo knows he’s won the genetic jackpot of the millennium. He knows he was born into a life of Extra Special VIP Treatment due to his killer Puppy Eyes + Dimples™ combo. Hyun-woo knows that in the eyes of man, it’s very hard for him to do wrong. He's never had to prove himself to anyone━ after all, his face does it all for him. Plus, there's also the fact that in addition to his looks, Hyun-woo is also smart and not a dickhead. Once you learn that, well, then it's game over. He practically becomes a god.

Hyun-woo knows he has it all. Brains? Check. Personality? Check. Looks? Quintuple Check that Bitch. But Hyunwoo can't always help but feel a little... disappointed with everything around him. It's the reason why Hyun-woo is terrible at keeping friends. It's the reason why Hyun-woo never pays attention in class. It's the reason why Hyun-woo is always so fucking bored. Bored of his school, of his classmates, of his life, which feels like one dull, twenty-year prequel for a story that hasn't even started.

See, what Hyun-woo doesn't know is that he takes a lot of things for granted. How can he, when all he's ever known is privilege?

ᴍᴏʀᴇ, ᴍᴏʀᴇ, ᴍᴏʀᴇ, ᴍᴏʀᴇ ᴛʜᴀɴ sᴛʀᴀɴɢᴇʀs ᴛᴇʟʟɪɴɢ ᴍᴇ ᴡʜᴀᴛ ɪ ᴡᴀɴᴛ ᴛᴏ ʜᴇᴀʀ

ᴋɪᴍ ᴍʏᴜɴɢ-sᴏᴏ ━━━━━━━ mᴀʟᴇ ━━━ hᴇᴛᴇʀᴏsᴇxᴜᴀʟ??

Hyun-woo's never known what it feels like to not be the center of his family's attention━ not just because he's the youngest child, born nine years after his youngest older sister, but also because he's the only boy, and therefore, the shining pride of the Moons.

Once you learn that, it makes a lot of sense that Hyun-woo's used to constantly being showered with affection and praise. When he was little, it was━ "What a handsome boy!" And then when he got a bit older it was━ "What a sweet, handsome boy!" And then when he got a little older than that it was━ "What a smart, sweet, handsome boy!" and so on and so forth until Hyun-woo could practically recite every single variation of every single compliment he was given from memory.

When Hyun-woo announced he was applying to become an engineer at INSA, his parents were thrilled, to say the least. After all, Hyun-woo's own father was an engineer, just like Hyun-woo's grandfather was an engineer before him and━ get this, Hyun-woo's great grandmother was an engineer before him. So yes, Hyun-woo was more than a little starry-eyed when he came to INSA (pun not intended)━ but could you really blame him for that? Could you really blame Hyun-woo, a boy who had been told his entire life that he was destined to do extraordinary things, for walking into the engineering lab on the first day and feeling like he was this much closer to fulfilling said destiny?

The awe-struck freshman disappeared before the first quarter ended. Now, three years later, Hyun-woo can't say whether he ever wanted to be an engineer at all. He can't say whether he ever wanted to be anything at all, really━ how was he supposed to trust that at age seventeen he knew what he was going to do with the rest of his life? Sure, engineering guarantees him a stable job with a steady pay and a comfortable life, but is that all Hyun-woo's family wanted for him? Fuck, is that all Hyun-woo wanted for himself? Every day, Hyun-woo grapples with the frustration of living in the ever-widening gaps━

the gap between who he is and who he thought he'd become,
the gap between who he is and who he's becoming,
the gap between who he is and who he wants to become.

Thank god Hyun-woo only has a year left before he graduates from this hell━ if it was any longer, he probably would ditch engineering in pursuit of a modeling career. God only knows what "compliments" his family would offer him then.

No no no no no no. Ryan was late. He had already racked up an impressive 21 tardies this school year— apparently, now that tally would go up to 22. Look, it's not like he had meant to be late. It couldn't be helped that when Ryan became engrossed in something (*cough* ship building), time was a non-existent entity which bore no relevance until he finished that something (*coughs louder* ship building), at which he became excruciatingly aware of the fact that he was seventeen!! minutes late to his physics class.

Look, if this was any other day, Ryan would totally have seen the empty spray paint cannister near the doorway. And if this was any other day, Ryan would have also totally not tripped over said cannister as he was trying to open the door. And look, if this was any other day, Ryan would totally not have collided into a student leaning against said doorway like a total moron. But apparently— this was not "any other day".

And that's exactly what happened.

Ryan yelped, instinctively grabbing the doorframe to stop himself from falling onto the boy. "Oh my god, I'm sorry..." What was his name? Fuck, Ryan knew this. The pilot, with the blonde hair, and the— nope. he didn't know this. Well.

"I'm really sorry, God. Um. Is there anything I can help you with?

Oh, fuck them. Making himself useful? Being a... doll? The amount of self-control it took for Caleb not to revert to some elementary school-esque state of mind and stab her with a pencil was... extraordinary, to say the least.

Not that it showed.

"Of course, it's my pleasure," Caleb replied sunnily (sunnily!!), slowly walking over to the other side of the classroom and picking up her pen. Who knew that this was what Caleb would be doing when he came back to INSA? The child prodigy, the genius pilot, bending to Asai Tsubasa's every will? For the sake of keeping up a pretense of good graces with the Asai family? What bullshit.

Except— Except it wasn't bullshit at all. They needed this connection. Caleb knew that. Jonathan Lee was a smart man. His success came from his logical reasoning— who was Caleb to doubt that? Put the pen back in the cup, Caleb told himself. He put the pen back in the cup. "Thank you so much for putting in a good word about me to my father, by the way— you really didn't have to."

"If I had more time, I would stay longer, but I'm afraid that I have a class to get to." A lie. It was 9 am and flight lessons didn't start until 11:30 am on any given day. But it's not like Asai knew, did she?

Min-jung stared very intently at the boy in front of her, trying to meet his gaze without making herself look stupid (which was hard because Min-jung was like, 5'4" on a good day and this boy in front of her was over 6 feet tall). What was he playing at? Who did he work for? She thought once she got into INSA, the questions would stop, but—

"Ha. ha. Okay, pretty boy, which outlet do you come from? Daily Mail? The Sun? Oh my god, no, it must be the Morning Star, isn't it? You're probably not even a real member of the welcoming committee aren't you?"

God, Minjung was so stupid. Of course. Of course these fucking tabloids had inside sources, even at INSA. Would she ever escape this? Min-jung used to like being famous. She loved when she went to Disneyland and got fast-passes to everything because she was Lola Sun and when she caught cute boys tried to discreetly take photos of her because look, that's Ellie Kim. But then her contract expired and someone posted that video they took of a Very Drunk Min-jung lip-syncing Very Badly at a nightclub and suddenly, she was a very different kind of famous.

The boy opened his mouth to say something, but Min-jung beat him to it. Like hell she was going to let him interrupt her.

"Yeah, that's right. I'm Ellie Kim. I'm Lola Sun. Yeah, I know, I'm even prettier in person than I am on TV. What do you want? An autograph? A kiss? The names of the guys I've fucked? If you're going to ask questions, might as well ask the ones people actually care about."

"You wish," Alex snapped back, making a face.

Neverthless, she grasped the extended hand gratefully... only to violently wrench away from it and kick him in the shin seconds later. "Oh, fuck you."

That boy and his fucking mouth. The logical side of Alex knew it was deliberate, that she always fought better when the hairs on the back of her neck were standing on edge and she felt as if her ferocity was justified. But the Alex side of Alex was angry. She had already had her ass kicked by an inanimate flesh blob tonight. And then again by Jaehyun minutes ago, even though she had been so close. So like hell there was going to be a third time.

So this time, Alex didn't swing. No, she leapt, pinning his arms against his sides with her legs before going in for the punch.

[ who even knows if this is realistic anymore it made sense in my head ok ]

Ryan is scared of a lot of things. Things such as flying. And cockroaches. And sudden movements. And blood. And━ well, you get the point.

But Ryan has never been scared of people. Ryan has always been told that he trusts others too easily, and he supposes that it's true. Unlike what most choose to believe, this is not a quality conceived out of some idealistic altruism━ it's just... Ryan. Look, he knows that it can make him pretty naive and brick-headed at times. And yes, there are definitely times that he resents it━ being so reliant upon others, getting too attached for his own good, falling in love with everyone he meets━ boy, does it get old.

But you can't deny that this is ultimately what makes Ryan such a good leader. Just as Ryan possesses the innate talent to be able to assemble and disassemble all and every object, he also possesses the innate talent of being universally likable. Ryan can't help but wear his heart on his sleeve. He can't help but genuinely care, and it shows. It shows when he takes the time to teach the first-years how to attach an external fuel tank to the launch pad. It shows when he greets every single person he sees in the halls by name. And it shows when you find him blubbering on his laptop keyboard over some sappy kdrama because she can't just leave him like that, not when his mother-in-law is trying to kill him!!

And you know what, if anyone could explain to Ryan why the fuck there are spiders in space and how in god's name can you make them stay far far away from him, maybe he would stop being so dependent on other people. He can dream, right?

ᴀɴᴅ ʏᴏᴜ ᴋɴᴏᴡ, ʏᴏᴜ ᴋɴᴏᴡ ɪᴛ's ɴᴏᴛ ꜰᴜɴɴʏ ━ ʙᴜᴛ ᴡᴇ'ᴅ ʟᴀᴜɢʜ ᴛɪʟʟ ɪᴛ ᴡᴀs

ɴᴀᴍ ᴊᴏᴏ-ʜʏᴜᴋ ━━━━━━━ mᴀʟᴇ ━━━ bɪsᴇxᴜᴀʟ?

When Ryan was eleven, his older sister graduated from INSA as the saluditorian of the Collins sector. And from that fateful day, the day Ryan walked onto INSA's campus for Ji-yeon's graduation ceremony, he knew he wanted be exactly like her when he grew up. He, too, would become a Squad A pilot at age 19, go into deep space to discover a planet and (this was the most important part) name it. His name would go down in the Pilots of our Future magazine, right next to his sister's, as the discoverer of planet Hubert McGuinness, named in honor in his very loyal, very dead hermit crab.

Turns out, Ryan kind of completely forgot about the fact that he got motion sickness very easily. And his crippling fear of heights. And also the fact that he hated flying. Oops.

It came as a surprise to no one but Ryan that he had gotten accepted to Stephenson, not Collins, sector of INSA. It came as a surprise to no one but Ryan that he had an extraordinary aptitude for building things, as if he hadn't been obsessed with constructing model spaceships for his entire life. And it came as a surprise to no one but Ryan that he was unanimously chosen to fill the leader role when the last leader graduated.

Surprise or no surprise, Ryan, like always, learned quickly. What does it take to be a good leader? Faith in his team and faith in himself━ that's all it is, really. That's all he needs, really. Although... it would be nice if he could find a way to convince the sector to name their next space shuttle Hubert McGuinness. But that's a work in progress. He'll get there. Someday.

Jaehyun used to be shorter than Alex when she had heels on, but still! short!. What had happened? She saw him reaching for her arm before the punch even made impact, felt herself trying to yank away, but he was faster. He was stronger. He was heavier, goddammit.

"Asshole," she muttered, not yet willing to admit defeat.

And then she saw Jaehyun's face staring down at hers, inches away, felt the steady triumph in his gaze even before she looked him in the eye, and her denial dissolved. Alex had lost. There was nothing she could do to change this fact so she might as well accept it, accept it even though she had been so close

So close. He was so close. She could smell the aftershave on him, and the sweat, and her laundry detergent. Sure, part of Alex definitely wanted to find a way to suddenly gain 100 pounds so she could wrestle away that smirk forming at the edges of his mouth. But part of Alex thought that this felt kind of nice. God, she must really be exhausted if she had the audacity to feel kind of nice about being slammed into a loss. Right. The loss. She snapped out of her thoughts.

"You. really. need. to stop. announcing victories. prematurely," Alex grunted as she pushed against the body above her with all her strength, trying to sit up. "So... best of out three?"

Wow, so this boy could express human emotions with his voice. Who would've guessed? Not Min-jung, that was for sure.

It was still fairly easy to tune out. Except for that last part, where his voice got all high and squeaky and it was just as unpleasant as it was before, except somehow worse and Min-jung decided that maybe she would take monotone 97 year-old about to get a tracheotomy over teenage! puberty relapse.

"Sorry," she muttered halfheartedly, a second too late. Because, yeah no, she wasn't sorry at all. Maybe if he, as a member of the Stephenson welcoming committee, had sounded a bit more... y'know... welcoming, in the first place, she would've been more sympathetic. But Min-jung was getting the very distinct feeling that this boy wasn't too fond of her either. So.

Besides, she just wanted to take in this goddamn room. With the huge rolls of butcher paper and windows everywhere and industrial coffee machines and tables scrawled with pencil marks and stray protractors and— and—

And his fucking voice, for the love of god. "I'm sorry, I mean this in the nicest way possible, I swear, but could you maybe shut up?"

Feb 08, 2017 10:40AM

210888
Min-jung did not like this boy.

What was his name again? Something stupid. The kind of name you'd want to forget. Much like his deep, monotone, awful voice, a voice that made Min-jung want to sedate herself. From the moment he first opened his mouth, she knew that if she ever opened hers to reply, she'd only end up offending him. Which normally wouldn't matter but... it was only her third day, which meant she should try to make a decent first impression. So she made the mature choice—clenching her jaw and biting her tongue and making faces at the back of his head when he wasn't looking.

She kept her mouth shut, even when he paused for questions and dear god, there were so many she wanted to ask. Questions such as, if he was going to give a tour to a Stephenson student, why did he have to start with the sun sector? Was he stupid? Did she look like a fighter? Why was he walking so fast? Who cared about the new model blasters?

When they finally, finally reached the Stephenson sector and they entered this room... Fuck. Fuck. It was love at first sight. Behold, Kwak Min-jung. Previous Sexuality: bisexual. Current sexuality: architecture drawing room.

"Shhh. Don't ruin this room with your voice." Oops. There went the decent first impression.
