Build-A-Monster
Duration: 8/1/2020 - 7/31/2021
Progress: 0 out of 25
Igor's Evil Twin - Read 5 - 10 books
Mad Scientist - Read 11 - 17 books
Evil Genius - Read 18 - 24 books
Megalomaniac Mastermind - Read 25+ books
Don your mad scientist lab coat and Build-A-Monster.
Using books, piece together your unique creation. Yes, technically it doesn't need to be a monster, any supernatural creature you wish to create/invent will do.
This challenge has three tiers from which you can pick, mix, or combine. You can choose one tier or do all three. It's up to you to decide.:
Tier One - For this tier, you actually build the monster using book covers. You can make this portion of the challenge as easy or as challenging as you wish, depending on how many body parts you want to use. For instance, if you wanted to make this as hard as possible, you may want to look for two separate eyes, a mouth, a head, hair, a torso, a shoulder, a neck, a back, legs, two hands, arms, and feet (or even a nose and ears if you can find them). If you want something a bit easier, however, you can look for just those unique parts (fangs, wings, skin, etc.) that you want. The point is, it's all up to you! You're the mad scientist. (Examples listed below)
Note: Look for book covers predominantly featuring the body parts you're after. For instance, the cover for Bitter Night below has arms on it, but they don't draw your eyes the way the arms on Leaving Paradise's cover do. Also, remember that all of the body parts below are optional. Mix & match, pick & choose, but remember to be creative and have fun.
Bitter Night (Horngate Witches, #1) by Diana Pharaoh Francis Leaving Paradise (Leaving Paradise, #1) by Simone Elkeles
Tier Two - For this tier, you may pick and choose what skills, abilities, tools, weapons, etc you want your monster to have. Just select books for which the characters have the traits you're looking for. (Examples listed below)
Tier Three - For this tier, create a story about how your creature came into being. Was it actually created by a mad scientist, a fluke of nature, a curse, or something else? Use book titles to fill in the gaps. (Example listed below)
Possible Alternative: For those of you who are die hard Spell-it-out challenge fans, you may, if you so wish, create your monsters using the spell-it-out challenge method. Using the first letter in the book's title (if the book starts with 'the', 'a', 'an', etc, you may use the first letter in the second word of the title), the first letter of an author's first or last name, or the first letter of a character's first, last, or nick name, you may spell out what unique body parts, tools, powers, etc your monster has like fangs, fur, brooms, spell book, wands, etc. (Example listed below.)
- Take it a step further by dressing your monster in a monster inspired outfit. You can search for covers with articles of clothing you'd like your monster to wear.
- Want to name your monster? Go ahead! Come up with a fun and unique name and tell us why you chose it.
- If you want an extra challenge, try to find two eyes, hands, feet, arms, shoulders, and legs. You can even look for a right & left of each!

~ Antonym Challenge ~
Duration: 8/1/2020 - 7/31/2021
Progress: 0 out of 40
Easy = 6 – 10 books
Moderate = 12 – 20 books
Hard = 22 – 30 books
Masters = 32 – 40
This challenge lasts for 1 year from the date you start
In this challenge you need to match a book to a book using antonyms in the title. For example the first book you read could have the word “hot” in the title. The matching book then needs to have a word like “cold” in the title. Other opposite words to hot are "cool, freezing, frigid" or even “dispassionate” or “mild.”
You can also use a derivative of the word, such as “freeze” or “frozen.” Or say you chose “angel.” Opposite words in another title could be “devil” or “devilishly.” You can also use series names.
Bonus: Read an additional book with both your chosen words in the title. For example, if you chose “hot” and “cold,” you could choose Cold Tea on a Hot Day. If you do the bonus for none, one or all - that's okay.
Anthologies, audiobooks, and re-reads are fine.
1.
2.
3.

As with most disasters, the area you are in is now may be uninhabitable or much different from what it once was. You may choose somewhere safe that you wish to now live (think space travel or perhaps move to a magical realm) or choose a book which depicts how the world has changed (think dystopian/post apocolyptic stories). Read a book set in your new world. This can be a fantasy land or a real place (Perhaps not all of earth was affected).

My Hero Challenge
Duration: 8/1/2020 - 7/31/2021
Progress: 0 out of 30
Chaste: 1 - 5 different types
Maiden: All 10 types
Lady: 2 of each type
Mademoiselle: 3 of each type
This challenge lasts for 1 year from the date you start
Everybody Loves a bad boy or even a nerdy hero.
How many heroes can you find?
Bad Boy Hero:
The Bad Boy hero is in a league of his own. More heroines and readers/viewers have fallen for the Bad Boy than any other hero. He is the ultimate rebel: mysterious, seemingly indifferent, and hard to get. He starts off behaving badly and unrepentant. His inner good is revealed however by the end of the novel due to actions of the heroine or circumstances that force the Bad Boy to become the knight in shining armor.
Alpha Hero:
Oh the Alpha Hero… how we love to hate and adore him. The innate leader in any situation, all look up to him and want to be him. He’s cool, confident, steady, strong, and sure. His ultimate role, I’ve noticed, is to take care of the heroine.
Brooding Hero:
Our poor tortured lonely Brooding Hero, how we love to torment him! Aloof, angry, wounded, and ultimately one of the most vulnerable heroes out there, the Brooding Hero has captured the most hearts in very recent history with Angel and Edward Cullen. (The Brooding Hero is a perfect foil for the Paranormal Hero.)
Rogue Hero:
The Rogue, who by any other time period outside of Regency, is a promiscuous cad in need of a physical. Utterly charming, completely dashing, and carelessly carefree about life and love, the Rogue is ready to live life to the fullest. Commitment is not a word in his vocabulary until the heroine sweeps into his sphere of influence.
Nerd Hero:
Another name for the Nerd Hero is the Beta Hero. He’s kind, sweet, and decent. He’s the best friend or the slightly awkward gentleman. The Nerd Hero almost always meets his full potential because of the heroine. He rises to the occasion… in more ways than one!
Tycoon Hero:
This hero type literally litters Harlequin presents. He can be a millionaire, billionaire, prince, sheik, or wealthy boss. Ninety percent of the time the Tycoon starts out isolated and jaded in the novel only to wind up happy and easygoing by the end.
Protector Hero:
The Protector Hero comes in many disguises and professions, most are obvious, but some not so much. You can find him playing the role of a cop, firefighter, spy, detective, bodyguard, part of the military, etc. The plot behind many Protector Hero stories involves a mystery where he almost loses the heroine while trying to save her.
Daredevil Hero:
Pirates and superheroes compose the majority of the Daredevil Heroes. They love action, they love fights, and they love thrills. Give them a damsel in distress and they’re all over that like white on rice.
Warrior Hero:
The Warrior Hero, funnily enough is a very reluctant hero. He thinks himself above it all. His mission in life is to fight and protect his home, his country, and his men. Then a woman gets thrown into the mix all kinds of chaos and havoc ensue and he fights it every step of the way only to get conquered by the heroine.
Paranormal Hero:
Oh yes, the Paranormal Hero, when a normal man just won’t cut it the Paranormal Hero steps in prepared to win hearts and steal our very souls. He oozes sex with his otherworldly good looks and quickens our imagination with images of the extraordinary. Call him a vampire, a wizard, a lycanthrope, or any other kind of superhuman being it’s all the same to him.

Oh My Gods!
Duration: 8/1/2020 - 7/31/2021
Progress: 0 out of 24
Demigod- 8 books
Olympian- 12 books
Titan- 24 books (2 books per Olympian)
--> Books with page counts of over 100 pages
--> Any readable format counts (paper, digital, audio)
--> Picture books not allowed, MG allowed if YA is also listed
--> No Graphic Novels / Manga allowed
1. Any books read for the Olympians listed under 'gods' has to feature a male protagonist; female protagonist for Olympians listed under 'goddesses.'
2. Instead of reading a book with the chacteristics listed under each Olympian, you can substitute a book featuring them. For example: the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan.
Olympian Gods
◈Zeus is the father of gods and men. Read a book about a president, monarch, ruler, or someone in a leadership position. This includes, but is not limited to: kings, princes, presidents, sheikhs, or prime minsters.
◈Poseidon is the god of the sea. Read a book about a man who lives in close proximity to a large body of water or has a job as a fisherman, marine-biologist, or sailor. You can also read a book with a body of water on the cover. Poseidon also has a lot of children so you can read a book about a man with more than 3 children.
◈Apollo is the god of music, poetry, prophecy, light, plague, healing and the sun. Read a book about an artist or a doctor. You can read a book with a cover that appeals to you aesthetically (in layman's terms: read a book that you think has a beautiful cover).
◈Ares is the god of war. Read a book about a man that is or was in the military or a warrior. This includes, but is not limited to: a Marine, someone in the army, navy, or air force, a knight, viking, ninja, gladiator, mercenary, etc...
◈Hephaestus is the god of fire and smiths. As a symbolism for fire, read a book with a predominantly red cover.
◈Hermes is the herald of the gods. Read a book about a man who has a sense of spirituality. Or read a book with a mythical being such as an angel (think paranormal).
Olympian Goddesses
◈Hera is the queen of the gods and the goddess of marriage and family. Read a book about a woman who is married or has children. You can also read a book about a female president, monarch, ruler, or someone in a leadership position. This includes, but is not limited to: queems, princesses, or prime minsters.
◈Demeter is the goddess of fertility, grain, and agriculture. Read a book where the protagonist is pregnant, is trying to get pregnant, or is someone who owns a farm, raises vegetables/flowers.
◈Athena is the goddess of wisdom and crafts, war and strategy, and inventions in science. Read a book about a woman who can --for lack of better words-- kick some serious ass.
◈Hestia is the virgin goddess. Read a book with a youthful character (think YA) or a virgin.
◈Artemis is the goddess of the hunt, wild animals, childbirth, healing and plague. Read a book with foliage or animals on the cover. Or read a book about a woman who loves nature.
◈Aphrodite is the goddess of love, sexuality, and beauty. Read a book about someone who is extremely beautiful, or in tune with her sexuality (think erotica)

Around the World in 80 Days
Duration: 1/30/2022 - April 20, 2022
Progress: 8 out of 8 (Silver - 4-8 books)
Like Jules Verne's book, for which this challenge was named, you have 80 days with which to complete this challenge. Once you're finished feel free to start it again
This challenge was created to help you expand your reading horizon by encouraging you to read books by authors that do not reside in the country you do.
You are supposed to read books from authors who live in other countries. For instance, Melina Marchetta and Markus Zusak both live in Australia so if you live in the US you could read books by those particular authors. Tana French is from Ireland so she would be another author you could read a book from. J.K. Rowling is from Great Britain so that is another possible author you could read books from. Paulo Coelho, from Brazil, is another author you may wish to read a book from. Kelley Armstrong is from Canada so you may wish to include books she wrote. Stieg Larsson was from Sweden so you may choose to read books by him.
