35559 I think white enough :) doesn't say 90% white, so the default 50% works for me, and that cover passes :)

35559 North and South (North and South, #1) by John Jakes a massive 812 pages, but read quickly because of it's soapiness. That said, I Very Much disliked that all the baddies (male or female) were depicted as being sexually voracious, with the really Bad Dude being bisexual and fat. Not cool!

North and South (North and South, #1) by John Jakes 812 pages
The Grand Sophy by Georgette Heyer 386 pages

35559 DQ's Day 1

1. Are you familiar with the Ramayana and the story of Keikeyi? Does that knowledge color your views of Keikeyi going in? If you aren’t familiar with the story, do you know much about Hinduism and their gods?

I'm not familiar with the Ramayana, beyond Rama = good guy to whom lots of stuff happens! Which really isn't great!

2. Losing her mother to banishment lead to Keikeyi’s discovery of her magic. What do you think of the Binding Plane and her exploration of what it can do? Were you as surprised as Keikeyi when she discovered what happened when pushing too hard?

The Binding Plane is super interesting - feels pretty unique, and I really like that it has serious repercussions! I hadn't expected the fallout for overusing it, but it does make sense, when you think about relationships, the need to nurture them and how too much expectations can turn you off a friend. the way Kaikeyi oved to using the links to get information was clever.

3. Keikeyi’s desire to learn to fight is admirable and she works hard learning the forms. Have you ever studied a martial art? If so, which one? Which would you want to learn if you could?

Love a learning montage sequence! I haven't studied any and am not sure I could - the discipline to do it well is intimidating!

4. When Yudhajit tells Keikeyi that she’s his favorite brother, she takes offense at his sexism. He responds by saying:” “It’s a compliment. Who wants to be a woman?” How would you have responded if it were you?

Yeaah, unimpressed too!

5. Do you think that Keikeyi was clever by demanding that Dasherat prioritize their future son as heir before she agrees to marry him? What are your thoughts on her arranged marriage as the third wife?

I can understand why - she is being demoted, really, from the only queen to one of three, so I get why she's after power. But it's kinda the opposite of how the Binding Place works - thats best with organic healthy growth of connection, so I suspect this imposed set of relationships are not going to be great, and she's going to have to be ruthless to get what she wants....

35559 I think the title starts PH is still open - I've grabbed it 🙂

35559 I have VW and GH at the moment. Smush them together?!

Oh, and VP!
Sep 02, 2023 07:25AM

35559 I think both?

I'm other news: finished my 800pager, which was popcorn. Though I didn't enjoy that all the baddies were also depicted as being sexually voracious and depraved with it...

35559 I have an 800+ book that I can read - gets it out of the closet too! also has a 2 in the page count, so double win. but doesn't meet the others :(

It's a family saga, so will either race through it like popcorn or drag as I hate on most of the characters...

I feel like saying: It's Steinbeck, of course there will! but actually, it's abused character that's a given rather than abusive!

35559 I think Mel said we can bump her Drop Bear tasks, so slot it in there :)

35559 yeah, but I'm not sure I've spun any that have required less than 500 pages...!

35559 Having a little end-of-the-month push to see if I can clear that dratted line!

Sea of Poppies (Ibis Trilogy, #1) by Amitav Ghosh - ehhhh..... interesting but mostly annoying, and not helped by not being a particularly complete ending. but I'm not motivated to read the next two in the series (unless the wheel demands a long book set in India!)

The Wallflower Wager (Girl Meets Duke, #3) by Tessa Dare - perfectly harmless historical romance. fluff enlivened mainly by the menagerie.

and, not finished yet but will be in an hour or so
Scrublands (Martin Scarsden, #1) by Chris Hammer - Australia's hostile (to white people) hinterlands plus crime mystery - very much in the lines of Jane Harper, but good writing
