721 I hope Brenda doesn't mind me answering on her behalf, it's one of my favourite genres but it is very broad. Its basically a book that has elements that are imagined, do not exist in the real world, now or in the past.
So supernatural, futuristic, magical, science fiction, dystopia, fantasy, horror, superhero tales or alternative history.

I knew Noel had to be up to something back then otherwise he wouldn't have been mentio..."

Felt much the same, I've enjoyed other Disher books, but yes, the ending was wound up so quickly. Seeing Charlie again? I guess he evolved a fair bit during the story. And, as for good old Noel!

Interestingly, this was the second of three books I've read in the past couple of months which is set on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula. The first was Christian White's Wild Place,..Is this setting familiar to other readers?

My third Garry Disher and the first non-Hirschhausen too, Disher sure does get around with his story locations.
2/3 rds through the book and things are building up.
I am about to read Christian White's Wild Place as recommended by one of my daughters.

Enjoying the setting, I spent my first 15 years in the Mornington Peninsula, living at Seaford and often travelling to Phillip Island which gets a mention.

Also Outback Creed by Jonathan Macpherson was published December 2017 so doesn't fit the 2022 New Release criteria :)

I too thought I'd like to do the Mole Creek visit, after reading The Better Son. Living in Tasmania at the moment so more than aspirational. I'd forgotten about the clock tower in Boy Swallows Universe till you mentioned it.
