I haven't jumped into the ebook publishing pool yet, but when I'm buying I never viewed $0.99 as "bargain bin" pricing. I always felt that was a good price. I can only speak for the people I know who buy ebooks and from our discussions I don't believe they would spend $2.99 for a short story unless it was an author they were already familiar with and wanted to read everything they published.
