Ooh, good question! When I very first started the first book, I thought the monsters were some environmental calamity, but the idea got bigger than that. The evolution came from a need to see the monsters as capable of being more than "dumb obstacles." I will say the first book had a bit of "winging it" but once I started plotting the rest of the story, a bigger plan emerged. I do a lot of research into various world religions, looking for cool myths and legends, which are woven in based on the geography where Matt fights. Some monsters are definitely going to be at human (or better) intelligence levels, and some aren't. It'll just depend on the circumstances and the lore for that particular area. Thanks for the question! : )

Curious about things not detailed in the books (like Matt's favorite flavor of ice cream--chocolate chip, by the way)? Ask away!
