I'm slowly re-reading SoS in bits and pieces. No one does it for me like Jonathan Drazen - he's my ultimate book boyfriend. Reiss's writing is cunning and witty with flawlessly executed plots. I was really hoping things would turn out this way for Monica and Jonathan, and no its not surprising because the story (therefore the relationship) has to continue, but things could have gone in so many different directions or just continued on with him being keeping himself distant. At first, I though Monica was going to give him hell and walk away, but she gave him the opportunity to explain with a little or a lot of prompting. This was my least favorite in the first Sequence. It's the most important, too. So much happens, but most of it in a disappointing rush. Some of it inappropriately, at least to me, stepping on the heels of other major plot points--I'm being purposely vague. I understand the need to push right on through all that drama, but even just a few pages or a chapter to reflect a bit more--even if just as an expression of introspection or confusion. There at also a few inconsistencies that made me crazy.
