Like so many, I devoured Spin in a massive Buddy Read held by the C.D. Canaries Group. C.D. of course refers to the author C.D. Reiss. What a fun way to read a book, especially one so heavily anticipated, and therefore discussed with so much enthusiasm!

I enjoyed Spin very much. Yes, there was the Romeo and Juliet, insta-love factor. Antonio, aka Spin, has seen and revered Theresa from afar. Theresa, who has had a vaguely alluded to horrible sexual experience at thirteen, is a bit apathe Like so many, I devoured Spin in a massive Buddy Read held by the C.D. Canaries Group. I enjoyed Spin very much. Yes, there was the Romeo and Juliet, insta-love factor. Antonio, aka Spin, has seen and revered Theresa from afar. Theresa, who has had a vaguely alluded to horrible sexual experience at thirteen, is a bit apathetic about sex. Well, she meets Spin and he just hits all her buttons. It's like a part of her has been only just surviving and he brings her roaring back to life. This explains, I think, her imprinting on him so intensely. She absolutely cannot go back to her life before him.

Now, Antonio I adore. I'm most struck by the emotional toll being a mafioso takes. I don't mean the stress of killing people or committing felonious acts. I mean his inability to go out to the movies or to take his girl dancing or to go away skiing for the weekend. Poor Spin! That really struck me, no mafia pun intended. Ah, the things we non-criminals take for granted. In a sense, Theresa brings Antonio roaring back to life, too. Yes, he lives a violent, kill or be killed existence, but because he does so day after day he's become, understandably, emotionally numb.

Theresa? She's a by the books good girl who dresses conservatively and doesn't curse. She still has feelings for her ex and contemplates taking him back, but I think it's the buzz of his life as LA's DA and as a mayoral candidate that she really misses. As an accountant there's not so much enjoyment for her, aside from the fact that she's somewhat of a number-crunching savant. She stands proud, much like "The Good Wife," I imagine, who also has a cheating bastard politician for an ex, by the way.

I do wish I could see Theresa more clearly. We don't get much of a description apart from her famed Drazen red, wavy locks and her petite, curvy body. Still, Tony says she's beautiful and that she has a great walk: And if Tony says so, it must be so. Capisce?

Antonio plus Theresa equals a potent chemistry. He recognizes in her a tightly-coiled passion and she, in turn, recognizes his, which is barely-held together. He shakes up her life, and she, in turn...well, I'm not so sure. Is it her beauty? Her brains? Her stoicism? He has only dated girls from Napoli, and she's the complete opposite, except that, like them, she is sweet and good...at least until...well, that's all I'm saying for now or Antonio will cut out my tongue.

The point is, Antonio knows he shouldn't want her: She's the DAs ex, for crissakes! She's completely wrong for him. In the end, though, both of them are drawn to just that, they're completely wrong for each other and the sex is combustive. Being together could cost them their lives. But they can't go back to the emptiness of their expected roles. It would be like dying. So, they're fucked, sorry for the curse, either way. And that makes their love all the more potent and poignant.

Let's leave them to their passion for now.

OMG I absolutely LOVE this book. After putting it on hold because I just couldn't get into it, I finally picked it back up after so many of my fellow canaries raved about this series. Once it hit a certain point in the book it was almost impossible to put down and I grew to adore the characters. I kick myself for not finishing sooner but at least I finally did and I highly recommend to everyone. ...more

I am so excited and happy that I finally picked up a book written by C. D. Reiss! It definitely won't be the only one. Spin is the dark romance tale between a wealthy, educated woman from high society and a tough, street smart and passionate man from the underbelly of California. Once Spin lays eyes on Theresa, it's already too late for her to save herself. Spin takes the reader on an emotional journey through character growth, zoning in on the themes of trust and discovering what your true self I am so excited and happy that I finally picked up a book written by C. D. Reiss! It definitely won't be the only one. Spin is the dark romance tale between a wealthy, educated woman from high society and a tough, street smart and passionate man from the underbelly of California. Once Spin lays eyes on Theresa, it's already too late for her to save herself. Spin takes the reader on an emotional journey through character growth, zoning in on the themes of trust and discovering what your true self wants and needs.

Theresa isn't only from money. She's from an imporatant family that goes back generations. She has recently broken off her engagement to a mayoral candidate, David, who wants her back mostly for political reasons. Theresa's a good girl - shes doesn't cause scenes, she acts appropriately according to her breeding, and she hates foul language.

Through a chance encounter at a night club, Theresa meets Antonio Spinelli, the dark haired, beautiful Italian immigrant who has no problems roughing people up. He dresses in designer suite, but it is clear that he has a wildness beneath the veneer. Spin is immediately smitten with Theresa, but he plays it cool. He eventually chases her and wiggles his was into her life.

One motif that runs through this book is the Madonna/Whore concept. Spin isn't necessarily looking for an untouched virgin, but he does want someone who is mentally innocent. He likes Theresa in part because her life experiences are relatively clean. Spin is a bad dude. He is involved in countless illegal activities. He doesn't want to come home to a woman who has experienced the same kind of darkness that he has. Theresa definitely changes by the end of this book and it is detrimental to the way Spin views her.

I loved Theresa and Spin when they were actually together. They were not constantly together in this book, which is a good thing as it allowed Theresa to decide what and whom she really wanted. Once Theresa decides what she wants, she pursues it fiercely. Unfortunately, there are too many times earlier where Theresa is wishy-washy about Spin. It takes her a while to accept what her heart wants. And the sex scenes! Woah! Smoking. Hot. Spin is sensuous and passionate. It really comes across on the pages.

One thing I didn't care for was the absence of Spin's point of view. He disappears from time to time and the reader has no idea what he thinks or feels for Theresa. We hear second-hand from his associates that he's "crazy" over Theresa, and Spin even says she makes him weak. But we don't see or even hear about his decisions and actions when he's being "crazy" about Theresa. I would have enjoyed more of that.

There is a lot of tension at the end between Theresa and Spin. Spin does a lot of fighting himself, and I felt my heart breaking for Theresa. She gets duped into a situation where she makes the wrong decision that sends Spin reeling. I enjoyed the ending overall, though, quite a bit. This does not end in what I would consider a big cliff hanger, although promises are made that will carry over into the next book. Reiss keeps us on the edge - as much as I felt better about the direction of this story, I can't bring myself to believe that things will be easier for Theresa and Spin. Spin lives in a dark and dangerous world - it's not his nature to completely share his life with anyone, and I'm not sure Theresa would accept everything that I expect will transpire between them. There is no smooth sailing for this couple. I foresee more misunderstandings, more heartahce and more character transformations.

You can tell when I really like a book because my reviews tend to go on and on. So it's pretty obvious that I loved this one and am highly intrigued by it. I recommend this book to all dark contemporary romance fans who love damaged alpha males and strong female leads. This is planned as a trilogy (thank goodness because I thought this book could have been longer) so hold onto your seats! I think this is going to be one long, sexy and angsty story - just what I love! ...more

In Songs of Corruption we meet Antonio and Theresa. Both of these characters are defined in my opinion as Superior, Political, Intelligent, and Noble.

Superior:
• Theresa is one of the oldest children in the Drazen family. She also has an ex that is the District Attorney. Her family is well known for their past discretions.

This was a re-read for me. The 1st time I read it, I had trouble picturing the Capo...I know, dumb, but it colored my enjoyment in a negative manner. Call me shallow, but I saw some posts on Facebook, found a Spin That turned me on, and it mad a difference to me on the re-read...now I'm looking forward to Ruin... ...more
