This is a story set in Minnesota, along the Minnesota River somewhere near Mankato and mentions Granite Falls and other towns quite close to where I live. It is a story of the Drum family and of Frankie, the middle child, who is thirteen. The year of 1961 there are several deaths in their little town where their father is the Methodist minister and Frankie and his younger brother Jake experience the awful grace of God. I wanted so badly to connect with this novel because so many people raved about it and also because it was a local author…unfortunately it just didn’t wow me. I finished it, but I wasn’t captivated and had to push myself to keep going. I tend to not enjoy wholesome stories told from a child’s prospective, so may just not have been a good pairing for me to begin with. I know I am very much in the minority with my views on this one, and I’m glad others were able to fully enjoy it.

Good Book. The foreshadowing kept me invested. Well written from the young man's perspective. The faith references spoke to me. I have recommended this book to a friend who lost a child a number of years ago and is struggling with forgiveness.
