A memoir about growing up off the grid in Idaho, raised by fringe members of the Mormon Church who did not believe in government, medical system, or formal education. This is her memory, as with all memories, who knows how accurate, even the author admits that memory is deceptive. If have of what she shares is true, she was abused physically by a brother. And I would be in great fear for that brother's wife and children. I found the book to be disturbing, if true, why no one has intervened.

Well written book! But very disturbing. I cannot imagine how this woman survived her upbringing in such a fundamentalist world to go on to a PhD! She is obviously a very strong, intelligent and driven woman.
The descriptions of injuries suffered by her and her siblings while working for their father made me cringe! And the treatments. I would have not survived in such a situation. I would have either been killed while working, or just shut myself down, crawled into a hole and died. It actually hu ...more

Memoirs are tricky. Parts of this story are horrifying, parts are interesting, it seems too long and I want an update - I'm concerned with her happiness. I would like to see a study or book club discussion of this book. I'm going to let it settle and then I might make a final decision. Isn't that what reading is all about?
