This is a debut novel by M. L. Stedman that takes place mostly on Janus island in the ocean between the Indian Ocean and the South Ocean following the end of WWI. The protagonist is Tom Sherbourne who has found his peace after the war in the isolation of manning a lighthouse. Tom meets Isabel in Australia and they marry and make their home on Janus island. Isabel struggles with the isolation and wants nothing more than to have a baby.
