What Members Thought
These stories are not happy ones but they are definitely thought provoking and evocative.
It's difficult to identify exactly what separates literature from fiction, but Danticat's writing clearly encapsulates that difference. The subject matter is similar to what is covered in other types of short story collections, but the style elevates it to something special. Rather than being able to breeze through one story after another, I had to pause and reflect after several of the stories. The writing is clear when it needs to be and poetic when it can be.
